Internet providers Sky Broadband and TalkTalk have launched a new website called Ultra Fibre Optic (UFO), which appears designed to showcase the forthcoming commercial launch of their new 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) network for residents in the city of York (England).

Internet provider Pulse8 Broadband has informed us that they’ve stopped offering superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC) packages with capped usage allowances and have instead upgraded to offer an unlimited service, which will come at no extra cost. On top of that they’re one of the few FTTC providers to offer a monthly contract.

The latest survey of 2,119 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that nearly three quarters (71.9%) of respondents would reject an otherwise ideal house if its broadband speeds were too slow, while 22.8% said they’d rather negotiate a lower price and only 5.1% weren’t at all bothered about Internet performance.

Telecoms giant BT has today submitted its official response to the Competition and Markets Authority‘s (CMA) review of their £12.5bn move to buy mobile operator EE. As part of this the operator has said that its acquisition would “enhance” rather than hurt competition in the UK telecoms market.

Mobile operator EE has announced that their standard tablet plans have increased in price by £1 per month, but as compensation all 4GEE Extra tablet plans will be reduced by £2 until 2nd June 2015. On top of that they’ve reintroduced the 4G pay-as-you-go limited edition SIM, which gives you 100GB of Mobile Broadband data free for 2 months.

The cost of domestic grade business connectivity is falling after BT Business slashed the price of their broadband and phone bundles, with some packages reducing by almost half over the usual 24 month contract term and others seeing a more general reduction of -£5 per month off the rental price.

The Government’s Chancellor is currently preparing a second “emergency” Budget 2015 for 8th July 2015 and as such the Institute of Directors (IoD), which represents 34,500 business leaders and directors, has used that as an opportunity to call for more spending on infrastructure, with broadband connectivity top of the list.

Any plans to deploy Broadband Regenerators (BBRA) around the United Kingdom, which could be used to boost some of the slowest copper ADSL based broadband lines from hundreds of Kilobits per second (Kbps) to 3-4Mbps (Megabits), appear to be stuck “on hold” at BT.

Customers of BT’s consumer services, particularly those who like to save money on their phone service by pre-paying for a year in advance, should note that the operators Line Rental Saver discount has gone up in price by +7.99% to reflect a policy of the service being 10% cheaper than the standard line rental charge of £16.99 per month.

In the future when one of BTOpenreach’s engineers pops around to investigate a fault (SFI2) or boost your broadband connection then they may now also access your ISP supplied router in order to interrogate the data it holds and hopefully highlight or reduce the occurrence of repeated faults (especially early life failures on new lines).

The Lincolnshire County Council has rejected an alternative superfast broadband network proposal from a little known ISP called ionNET, which would have used its point-to-point and ‘up to’ 30Mbps capable wireless broadband network to reach rural parts that the local BT and Broadband Delivery UK programme might overlook.

In a surprise move Ofcom’s Business Connectivity Market Review (BCMR2016) has done a U-turn on its 2012 policy by proposing that rival ISPs, specifically those that provide Leased Lines, should be granted access to BT’s national Dark Fibre network (i.e. un-lit fibre optic lines that have spare capacity for coping with future demand).

The Government’s national Broadband Delivery UK programme, which aims to make “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services available to 90% of the population by 2016 and 95% by 2017, has so far helped to put related connections within reach of 2.5 million additional homes and businesses (premises passed).

The aptly named ISP Satellite Internet, which makes use of the SES (ASTRA) platform to deliver ‘up to’ 20Mbps Satellite broadband services across the United Kingdom and Europe, has announced that customers on selected packages will be able to save £229 thanks to their offer of free equipment.

Last week we confirmed that the Connected Counties project for Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire in England had signed a new contract with BT to extend the reach of “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity beyond the current target of 90% (April 2016). Today we have the first solid details concerning the roll-out plan.

Apparently BT is having to draw up an urgent plan to tackle broadband capacity problems on the remote Shetland Islands, which resides off the northern coast of Scotland. Locals have reportedly noticed a huge fall in their Internet speeds after the operator’s first “fibre broadband” (FTTC) connections went live last year.

UK ISP TalkTalk has posted their latest results for Q1-2015 (calendar), which revealed that the provider added +47k broadband subscribers in the quarter to total 4,283,000 (sharply up from +15k added in Q4 2014). But there’s bad news for some of the recent off-net (BT based) broadband customer gains from Virgin Media and Tesco.
