After a small delay BTOpenreach has this week started to trial a fix for the latency and performance problems that were created on some superfast broadband Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) lines following the recent introduction of Physical Retransmission ReTX (G.INP – ITU G.998.4) technology.

Mobile operator EE reports that their 4G (LTE) customers have now passed the magic 10 million mark and related Mobile Broadband traffic has surpassed 3G, with rural areas seeing some of the best benefits. 4G usage in rural parts of Scotland has increased 60%, usage in rural Wales is up 50% and data in the South West of England was up 49%.

Fancy a completely free 4G mobile SIM that comes with 200MB of data, 200 texts and 200 minutes of voice calls per month? A new operator called FreedomPop, which started in the USA with a similar product, has announced that it will be doing the same for the United Kingdom from this summer.

The Cheshire East Council looks set to become the latest local authority in England to require that all new build residential and business premises be constructed with support for “state of the art high-speed Internet connectivity“, which will apparently constitute “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+).

A previously unknown operator called TrueSpeed Communications has announced a new deal with Hibernia Networks, which will help it to roll-out a 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable pure fibre optic (FTTP) broadband network to cover homes and businesses in parts of North East Somerset and possibly Wiltshire (England).

According to BT about 1 in 3 premises (homes and businesses) on the Isles of Scilly are now connected to the operators new “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network, which was only installed on the island community some six months ago as part of the wider EU backed £132m Superfast Cornwall project.

The communications regulator has today published their latest quarterly consumer complaints report to the end of 2014 and unsurprisingly, despite a general flatness in complaint volumes, there are still some familiar names topping the tables. We’re looking at you EE (fixed broadband and phone), Vodafone (mobile) and BT (Pay TV).

Netflix, the popular Internet movie and TV streaming provider, has just published their latest April 2015 ISP Speed Index update for the United Kingdom and revealed that Virgin Media is still holding the top spot with a score of 3.74Mbps (Megabits per second). But take with the usual pinch of salt.

The newly elected Conservative Government has conducted somewhat of an exercise in musical chairs, which has resulted in the previous Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), Sajid Javid MP, being replaced by John Whittingdale, the MP for Maldon.

The Onlincolnshire project in the East Midlands of England, which is currently working with BT to roll-out FTTC/P based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services to “at least” 89% of all premises in the county by April 2016, appears to have briefly hit a snag with a small EU funding shortfall.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has announced that their standard ‘up to’ 17Mbps unlimited broadband and free weekend calls package has been reduced in price, making it free for the first 12 months of service (£7.50 per month thereafter). On top of that new customers will also be able to benefit from a £100 M&S e-voucher.

As expected the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire project in England will soon be extended, putting “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity within reach of thousands more homes and businesses, after the local authority officially signed a Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract with BT.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has shot up from having a total of 4,625,800 broadband subscribers at the end of last year to 4,969,700 at the end Q1 2015, although this is predominantly due to a move that combines the operator’s UK results with that of UPC Ireland (Sky does something similar).

In a controversial twist the Government’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has called on a superfast broadband project in Rothbury (Northumberland), which received a slice of state aid, to repay any benefits derived from claw-back (as opposed to reinvesting into better coverage).

We’re no fans of the musical chairs approach to voucher discounts, which seem to change weekly, but BT has done an unusual new twist. New customers who join one of their BTInfinity (FTTC) “fibre broadband” packages will now also get a £125 Prepaid Visa Card, which reduces to £75 for standard broadband (ADSL) subscribers.
