New customers who sign-up to PlusNet’s superfast broadband (FTTC) capable packages should note that the operator has reduced some of their standard prices for the first 6 months of service and, much more strangely, dropped the upload speed of their “Unlimited Fibre” option from 19.5Mbps to just 2Mbps.

A business operating out of Redhill Farm Business Park in Elberton (South Gloucestershire) has been left confused after they were suddenly told by Virgin Media that it would cost £19,849.19 to upgrade their old 0.8Mbps ADSL broadband line to a faster service, which is up sharply from the original quote of £3,500.

Hyperoptic, which is deploying a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTB/P) network around parts of 12 UK cities, has surveyed 3,000 British people to conclude that 67% work from home at least once a month and 93% work longer hours when at home. But 72% also claim to feel more productive in the office, with poor home broadband taking the blame.

The Northern Lincs Broadband (NLBB) project has just become the latest Broadband Delivery UK scheme to complete its first contract, which means that BT’s superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services have successfully been put within reach of an additional 31,000 local homes and businesses in North Lincolnshire (England).

Internet giant Google has announced that their massively popular online video streaming service, YouTube, can now stream content using the very latest 8K Full Ultra HD video standard (7680 x 4320 pixels). But at twice the resolution in both directions of 4K it also requires double the broadband speed (i.e. around 50 Megabits per second).

Customers of Sky’s broadband-based NOW TV service, which among other things offers live streaming access and catch-up content for some of the media giants top TV channels (e.g. Sky Atlantic, Sky 1, Discovery etc.), has announced plans to launch a new set-top-box, a Sky Sports Month Pass and other improvements.

BTOpenreach has confirmed that VDSL2 Vectoring (ITU-T G.993.5), which reduces crosstalk interference on ‘up to’ 40-80Mbps FTTC “fibre broadband” lines and thus improves service speeds, is now being deployed beyond trial areas; specifically focusing on “areas where it delivers the most benefit to customers“.

BT’s YouView (IPTV) based broadband TV service has taken another shot at arch-rival Sky (Sky Broadband) by announcing a new agreement to launch the AMC TV channel in the UK this September 2015, which includes the “exclusive” UK television premiere of “Fear the Walking Dead“.

A new report from Juniper Research has predicted that Mobile Network Operators (MNO) will offload 60% of their Smartphone and Tablet based Mobile Broadband (3G, 4G) data traffic to WiFi networks by 2019 (equivalent to 115,000 Petabytes), which is up almost four-fold from 30,000PB this year.

Internet provider Call Flow Solutions has won an extension to their on-going pilot of a new hybrid fibre optic and wireless broadband network in rural Hampshire (England), which means that around 200 additional premises in the small village of Privett should also benefit from the service.

CityFibre’s on-going work to build a new 62km long fibre optic network in Hull (East Yorkshire, England), which is part of a major long-term deal to supply capacity for local mobile operators EE and Three UK (here), has found a way to slash its costs by harnessing some of MS3‘s existing network in the area.

The British Bankers Association has called on the Government to invest more money into delivering universal broadband and mobile connectivity to plug not-spots and thus allow more customers to take advantage of mobile and Internet banking, which is becoming increasingly popular.

The Virgin Media WiFi Buddy app, which works to auto-connect the operators Mobile customers to over 150,000 WiFi hotspots (including 22,000 UK hotspots from The Cloud and more than 20 million hotspots worldwide), has now been made available to iOS (iPhone, iPad etc.) devices as well as Android.

The Hampshire County Council in England has called on the UK Government to give district councils “clear legal powers” so they can insist, as part of the planning process, that superfast broadband speeds (24Mbps+) are made available to both new build homes and even retrofitted into existing developments.

The communications regulator will, after around five long years of development, on 20th June this week finally succeed in forcing the majority of fixed line broadband and phone providers across the United Kingdom to introduce a “simpler and more reliable” method of switching service. Budget ISP TalkTalk has announced that their top Plus TV bundle of unlimited broadband, phone (anytime UK calls), premium TV content (YouView) and a free mobile SIM is being reduced from £20 to just £10 per month for the first 18 months of service. A £100 Love2shop voucher has also been thrown in.

The CEO of the community funded and built B4RN network (Barry Forde), which is currently rolling out an ultrafast Gigabit capable fibre optic (FTTH) network to homes across remote parts of rural Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cumbria in England, has today been named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours (2015).
