Controversy has erupted after the London Grid for Learning (LGfL), which has a deal with Virgin Media to supply broadband to educational establishments in the city, began blocking schools from viewing emails sent by rival ISP Exa Networks that has been trying to sell its own Internet solutions.

The Digital Scotland scheme, which is working alongside BT to roll-out “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) networks to 85% of premises in Scotland by the end of 2015/16 and 95% by the end of March 2018, has today named the next 40 communities (20,000 premises) to benefit.

The UK telecoms regulator has today confirmed the final details for their “early” 2016 auction of 190MHz worth of high-capacity spectrum in the 2.3GHz (2350MHz to 2390MHz) and 3.4GHz (3410MHz to 3600MHz) bands, which could be used for mobile (4G) and or other fixed wireless broadband services.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, and WiredScore have this week introduced a new “Connectivity Ratings Scheme,” which awards big buildings in the city with a rating of either Platinum, Gold, Silver or Certified (aka – Bronze) depending upon the quality of its broadband and Internet connectivity.

UK ISP BT has increased the included Sainsbury’s gift cards on their packages to £75 for standard broadband (up to 17Mbps) and £125 on their superfast up to 38-76Mbps capable BTFinity (FTTC) services, but the one-off “fibre activation fee” has jumped from £35 to £39 (free for Infinity 2 packages).

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has announced the start of construction on their new 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in rural Gloucestershire (England) and the Cotswolds, which should reach 6,495 additional premises in the county by the end of 2017.
