The CEO of Sky UK and Ireland (Sky Broadband), Stephen van Rooyen, has confirmed that existing customers who are interested in taking their forthcoming Sky Mobile plans will be able to register their interest from 31st October 2016.

The Local Government Association, which supports councils from all over England and Wales, has called for the proposed 10Mbps broadband Universal Service Obligation (USO) to include a subsidised “social tariff” so that those who are unemployed or on low incomes can get an affordable service.

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced that their 300Mbps capable “fibre optic” broadband and TV network will be expanded to reach an additional 20,000 homes and businesses in the UK city of York, which is where Cityfibre, Sky Broadband and TalkTalk have also been deploying 940Mbps FTTP.

The Government’s Digital Minister, Matthew Hancock MP, appeared to send all the right signals today when he told the ‘Broadband World Forum’ in London that “gigabit speeds” and pure fibre optic (FTTP/H) connectivity “is the future” that he wanted, with specific help for alternative networks.

Internet retail giant Amazon is allegedly investigating the possibility of launching its own fixed line home broadband and phone service in Europe (the United Kingdom is said to be first on their list), which would probably involve selling a triple-play bundle with their Prime Instant Video (TV) content.

Openreach (BT) and Huawei have today claimed to be the “first companies in Europe” to trial three new ultrafast fibre optic broadband technologies, including 40Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable NG-PON2, 10Gbps XGS-PON and 2.5Gbps GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) over a single fibre.

A new trial of the future XG.FAST technology, which could one day replace Openreach’s forthcoming G.fast based ultrafast broadband service, has beaten last year’s BT trial by pushing a peak aggregate speed of 8000Mbps over 30 metres of twisted-pair copper (BT achieved 5.6Gbps at a similar distance).

The United Kingdom’s telecoms regulator has today confirmed that the 700MHz (694-790MHz) radio spectrum band, which is currently used for Digital Terrestrial TV (DTTV) services, will be re-purposed for Mobile Broadband (4G / 5G) operators to use by Q2 2020; 18 months earlier than originally planned.
