Residents of the Farndon Fields Development in Market Harborough (Leicestershire), many of whom have been forced to suffer slow ADSL2+ broadband speeds despite owning new build homes, look set to gain access to 80Mbps capable FTTC “fibre broadband” thanks to a new co-funded deal with BT.

Low cost ISP Plusnet has today reduced the monthly price of their unlimited ‘up to’ 17Mbps ADSL2+ and ‘up to’ 38-76Mbps FTTC based “Fibre Broadband” packages (these all include line rental) by several £ for new customers, which will be available to order until 17th January 2017.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset project has today signed a major new £62.25m deal with rural ISP Gigaclear, which will enable the provider to roll-out their 1Gbps (1000Mbps+) capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband network to 35,225 of the hardest to reach premises in the region by 2019.

Sky Broadband will today become the first ISP in the United Kingdom to start advertising their headline packages using average download speeds. On top of that they’ve tweaked some of their broadband prices / contract lengths and launched a new dedicated “Tech Team” to boost customer support.

The telecoms regulator has proposed a series of changes to their rules for broadband, phone and mobile providers, which they claim will help to protect consumers from harm. Some of the tweaks include changes to tackle billing accuracy, debt collection, nuisance calls, complaints handling and support for those with disabilities.

The UK telecoms regulator has today published their Q3 2016 consumer complaints study, which reports that the total volume of fixed line Broadband, Phone and Pay TV complaints in the UK has increased, while Mobile gripes declined. Sadly BT came out as the biggest magnet for broadband gripes.

Aviation and technology company Boeing has completed the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) for the first two ViaSat-3 class satellites, which will be able to handle 1 Terabit per second of data and make it possible to offer 100Mbps packages to home users in the Americas, UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa.

A new IHS Markit report from the EU cable (DOCSIS) trade association, Cable Europe, has praised Virgin Media’s (Liberty Global) £3bn network expansion for helping the United Kingdom to come second from top in terms of being the largest EU cable market by revenue (generating £3.4bn (€4bn)).

The Bank of Scotland’s (Halifax, Lloyds) annual Quality of Life Survey, which examines a combination of broadband speed, health, crime rate, weather, employment, happiness and skills etc. to determine the best places in the UK to live, has ranked Winchester and the Orkney Islands top.

TalkTalk has today decided to complement their 18 month contract terms by adding a lengthy 24 month option (i.e. 12 and 18 month terms are also available) and they’ve tweaked some of their broadband bundle discounts to match, although the new offers won’t last forever.

Ofcom’s new Smartphone Cities study has examined the Mobile Broadband performance of 4G network operators O2, EE, Three UK and Vodafone across 7 of the United Kingdom’s major cities (Belfast, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London, Sheffield and Southampton). Overall EE was the fastest.

Ofcom has today published their annual Connected Nations 2016 report, which confirms that 89% of UK premises are now within reach of a fixed line superfast broadband service (up from 83% in 2015), with take-up hitting 31% (up from 27%). But only 1.7% (498K premises) can get “full fibre” (FTTP/H).

Rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has announced that their state aid supported and 1000Mbps+ capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) broadband roll-out in the Epping Forest area of Essex (England) has now reached 2,000 premises passed of its 4,500 goal for the end of 2017.

Openreach (BT) will shortly begin offering ISPs 6 months of free rental on new PCP Only (Self-Install) FTTC / VDSL2 based “fibre broadband” connections when taken as a Simultaneous Provide service (e.g. broadband and phone line rental at the same time), but only on “eligible [street] cabinets“.
