Which? H1 2017 UK Mobile Network Survey Ranks EE and Vodafone Bottom

Consumer magazine Which? has published the outcome from their first 2017 consumer survey of Mobile Network Operators (MNO), which ranked Giffgaff top with a customer score of 81%. Sadly Vodafone and EE could both be found languishing at the bottom of the table on 50% (tied).

Villagers in Poulshot Block BT from Building New Poles for “Fibre Broadband”

Residents in the village of Poulshot (Wiltshire) reportedly used their cars to block an Openreach (BT) contractor after they began erecting 5 new telegraph poles for superfast broadband in a conservation area, which a local Parish council chairman said was done without prior consultation.

UK Cable and “Fibre Broadband” Lines Overtake Pure Copper DSL Services

A new update from Point Topic has summarised the latest data from ISPs in the United Kingdom, which found that faster Cable (DOCSIS) and “fibre” (FTTC/P/H/B) based broadband lines have finally overtaken older / slower pure copper Digital Subscriber Line (e.g. ADSL) services.

YouGov – 16% of British Adults Have Used an Internet VPN or Proxy

A recent survey of British adults by YouGov has revealed that 16% of people have used a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or Proxy Server, with 48% adopting it in order to circumvent region (geo) blocking of online content and 44% using it to enhance their Internet security.

UK Trades Union Congress Calls for More Public Investment in Broadband

The Trades Union Congress (TUC), which represents about 5.6 million British workers via 50 unions, has today published a new analysis of household debt that calls on the Government to push “a lot more” investment towards broadband and other areas in order to help tackle a shortage of well-paid jobs.

UK ISP TalkTalk has reportedly complained that BT is not offering them enough compensation, which comes after Ofcom ruled in March 2017 that Openreach had broken their rules by failing to pay ISPs proper compensation for late installations of high-speed business lines (Ethernet).

Ericsson has teamed up with mobile network operator Verizon (USA) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Indy 500) to demo how their future 5G Mobile technology can deliver downlink data speeds of up to 6.4Gbps (Gigabits per second) and “extremely low latency“, all in a car travelling at 60MPH.

ONS 2017 Update – 4.8 Million UK Adults Have Never Used the Internet

The Office for National Statistics has published their latest annual 2017 Internet Access report, which reveals that 9% (4.8 million) of UK adults have never used the Internet and that’s down from 10.2% (5.3 million) last year. Sadly issues of age and disability remain key barriers.

Openreach Introductory Pricing for 160Mbps and 330Mbps FTTP Broadband

In keeping with today’s earlier G.fast announcement (here), Openreach (BT) has also confirmed the introductory pricing for their two matching Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) based broadband speed tiers: 160Mbps (30Mbps upload) and 330Mbps (50Mbps upload).
