The Government’s £1.6bn+ publicly funded Broadband Delivery UK project has published its latest progress update to the end of 2017, which reveals that it has so far helped 4,772,207 extra premises across the United Kingdom to be reached by a fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network.

iD Mobile (Dixons Carphone) today claims to have become the first Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) in the United Kingdom to introduce Wi-Fi Calling, which allows customers with no 3G or 4G data connection to make or receive calls (and send texts) via WiFi.

Last week we warned that UK customers of Sky Broadband could expect to be hit with price increases from 1st April 2018 (here) and we now have some details of what will be changing, which reflects a rise of about 3.48% on the current pricing.

The mobile division of cable ISP Virgin Media (Virgin Mobile) will later today unveil a major refresh of their monthly 4G SIM-Only and handset plans, which boosts allowances and also introduces an “unlimited” data tariff (only available to existing home broadband customers).

The Government’s Environment Secretary, Michael Gove MP, has told a meeting of UK farmers that fast broadband and 4G mobile coverage remains “patchy and poor in many areas” and that true universal coverage could be “paid for by the money we no longer have to give to the EU.”

Last week it emerged that cable broadband ISP Virgin Media UK had begun deploying a new firmware update v9.1.116.603 for their Hub 3.0 (SuperHub v3) wireless router in order to fix the long running latency bug (here) on the Intel Puma 6 chipset. Today we wanted to share a quick update.

Another day, another discount for UK ISP Plusnet. This time they’ve introduced a new offer that cuts the price of their ‘up to’ 76Mbps FTTC “Unlimited Fibre Extra” broadband and phone package to £29.99 a month for 18 months (£38.98 thereafter) with free activation. Available until 6th March 2018.

ISP Vodafone and fibre optic builder Cityfibre have today confirmed that the second UK city to benefit from a deployment of their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) ultrafast broadband network will be Aberdeen in Scotland, which is expected to cost around £40m.

The Swindon Borough Council‘s £1.9m contract with UKB Networks, which has been building an LTE (4G) based Fixed Wireless Access network that can bring “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) to 19,500 premises (99.4% total coverage), is facing a fresh challenge over changes to its deployment.

Little known broadband and phone provider Care Free Communications has got itself into hot water with Ofcom, which comes after the telecoms regulator found “reasonable grounds for believing” that the ISP was no longer a member of an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) scheme.

RootMetrics has today released their H2 2017 study of 4G mobile network performance across 16 of the United Kingdom’s most populated metropolitan markets (cities), which predictably scored EE as the best overall network operator and they’re followed in second place by Three UK.

The UK Government has approved the extension of a controversial new “lane rental” power, which will allow local authorities across England and Wales to charge utility companies by the hour for civil engineering work that causes significant disruption (traffic congestion etc.).

Cable ISP Virgin Media looks to be in a good shape ahead of the forthcoming change in UK advertising rules. The provider has published a monthly update that reveals the “average” speeds of their broadband packages and in most cases they’re now delivering faster than the headline rate.

Broadband customers who signed-up last year to trial TalkTalk’s new YouView (IPTV) based Multi-Room TV service are finally starting to receive their kit. The ISP is aiming to launch the service commercially during early 2018 (most likely around late March or April).
