The Scottish Government‘s Rural Economy Secretary, Fergus Ewing, has called on the UK government to correct the “grossly unfair” 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which appears to be in conflict with Scotland’s own £600m plan to deploy 30Mbps+ broadband to nearly all homes.

As expected the UK telecoms regulator has today finalised precisely how much extra mobile spectrum has been won in the recent auction of the 4G friendly 2.3GHz and future 5G targeted 3.4GHz radio spectrum bands, which saw EE (BT), O2, Three UK and Vodafone spend a total of £1.37bn.

A new report created jointly by the Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), UKWISPA and Point Topic has estimated that alternative network ISPs had expanded the reach of FTTP/H/B based “full fibre” ultrafast broadband networks to 998,500 premises at the end of 2017.

Mobile operator Vodafone has today claimed a “major milestone in UK telecommunications” by becoming the first in the country to test the new 3.4GHz radio spectrum band on a live 5G network, which ran between Manchester and the company’s HQ in Newbury (Berkshire).

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced that their 350Mbps ultrafast broadband and TV network is being extended to cover 11,500 premises in the Rothwell part of Leeds via their £3bn investment under ‘Project Lightning‘, which should complete by the end of 2019.

The UK telecoms regulator has announced that they will NOT attempt to reintroduce a “temporary remedy” for Dark Fibre Access, which would have required BT (Openreach) to provide a restricted form of DFA in the leased line (Ethernet) markets for the period until March 2019. But DFA will be tried again.

Mobile operator O2 UK and wireless infrastructure developer Arqiva have teamed up to improve 4G and future 5G mobile coverage and network capacity across London by installing up to 300 new small cells. The first sites will go live this summer 2018, with deployment continuing up to 2020.

A new survey of 2,205 UK internet users (conducted between 22nd Feb to 22nd March 2018) warns that 82% of respondents have never changed the default admin password for their broadband ISP router and 86% have never updated its firmware. This could make them more vulnerable to hackers.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has announced that their remaining base of “off-net” TV only (previously Blinkbox) customers, which may also include some broadband and TV subscribers that have not synced accounts, are having their TV service moved over to the third-party Rakuten TV platform.

RootMetrics has today published another batch of results from their latest study, which reveals the 4G (LTE) network coverage of the United Kingdom’s four primary mobile operators across 16 of the biggest UK cities. EE delivered the best coverage but often only by the narrowest margin.

Openreach (BT) has confirmed that they will imminently begin withdrawing their Long Reach VDSL (LR-VDSL) broadband technology trial from several deployments across the UK, which at one point had been touted as way of helping to deliver on the government’s 10Mbps broadband USO.

A new study has estimated that around 4.1% of premises in the United Kingdom are likely to be affected by full to capacity FTTC (VDSL2) based “fibre broadband” street cabinets on Openreach’s (BT) network, which is up from 3% last year. Related premises may be unable to order the faster ISP service.
