The latest Q4 2017 Telecoms Market Data Tables from Ofcom have confirmed that the United Kingdom is home to a total of 26 million fixed home and small business broadband lines (up by +546,000 since Q4 2016), with 53.4% being faster full fibre or hybrid-fibre based (FTTC, FTTP/H, Cable etc.) services.

A new FN Research survey commissioned by BT has reported that 60% of people in Northern Ireland would be put off from moving into a new house if it suffered from “poor or slow broadband“. Similarly 63% said that having “fibre broadband” (FTTC / FTTP) in their household was very important.

A new study, which examined the economic impact of broadband connectivity among 35 OECD countries between 2002 to 2016, has found that a rise in broadband adoption and speeds over the period led to an increase in UK GDP of 0.47% per annum on average (cumulative total of 6.7% over the period).

Rural ISP Gigaclear has achieved an important milestone in their contract to deploy a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTP/H) broadband network to 53,000 premises in Devon and Somerset. The operator has managed to run their cable underneath the iconic 19th century Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Mobile operator Three UK has today announced a new contract with SSE Enterprise Telecoms, which will initially see the latter facilitating fibre optic connections to 20 of the mobile operator’s core data centres. The deal helps to enhance capacity for their existing 4G network and prepare it for 5G.
