Vodafone UK Drops 38Mbps Superfast Broadband to Just £20

Once again ISP Vodafone has managed to push the UK entry-level price for an FTTC (VDSL2) based unlimited superfast home broadband and phone line package even lower. Prices have now dropped another £1 to start at £20 a month for their ‘up to’ 38Mbps plan and £25 for ‘up to’ 76Mbps.

Ofcom UK Launch Probe of EE’s Early Termination Charges

Mobile and broadband provider EE has today become subject to a new probe by the national telecoms regulator. Ofcom intends to examine whether the operator’s Early Termination Charges (ETC) comply with its obligations. ETCs apply to customers that choose to exit their contract early.

Job Fears as Barclays Hit BT Over Wholesale Fibre Optic Competition

Barclays has cut its rating on BT from “overweight” to “equal weight” and reduced their price target on shares by 20% to 280p. The broker reasons that BT’s network access division (Openreach) is coming under pressure in the UK wholesale market from rival “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband ISPs.

Post Office Adopt Average Broadband Speeds and Discount Prices

The Post Office has today become the latest big phone and home broadband ISP after Sky Broadband to adopt “average” (measured at peak time) advertised download speeds on their packages. On top of that they’ve also reduced their prices, which may help to counter the recent price rise news.

Virgin Media UK to Close Swansea Call Centre and Cut 772 Local Jobs

Cable broadband operator Virgin Media has announced that it is to cut 772 jobs (including 220 roles from SITEL) by shutting its call centre in Llansamlet (Swansea, Wales), which is expected to complete by the autumn of 2019. The good news is that most of these will be shifted to elsewhere in the UK.

Security researchers working for VPN Mentor have tested “many random” GPON ISP routers and discovered that all were vulnerable to two new exploits that could enable a hacker to hijack the device. Related routers are used by Gigabit “full fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband providers around the world.

Progress Toward 100% Superfast Broadband Cover in Suffolk UK

Ofcom has published their annual study of service quality, call waiting times, complaints and service provision among the largest UK ISPs and Mobile operators, which among other things found that Plusnet had the longest call waiting times (7:50 mins) and the highest broadband satisfaction (86%).

Manx Telecom‘s roll-out of a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) ultrafast broadband ISP network on the Isle of Man is making progress. The operator now expects to reach 13% of local premises (4,600 homes and businesses) by the end of 2018.
