Customers of BT’s UK broadband products typically receive their email service at no extra cost, but if you want to retain this after leaving the ISP then you’d currently need to pay £5 per month for their Premium Email. Bad news though, on 22nd August 2018 that price will be hiked by 50% to £7.50.

Generally speaking broadband connectivity, while considered by many in the UK to now be an essential utility, is by no means as important as running water or electricity. As such we tend to expect the latter two to be present almost everywhere but tell that to the tiny rural village of Hebron (Wales, Carmarthenshire).

Budget UK ISP TalkTalk has today claimed to be launching “Britain’s lowest price Sky Sports deal,” which enables customers of their YouView (IPTV) based Pay TV, phone and “Faster Fibre” (FTTC) broadband service to get Sky Sports for just £15 extra per month for 9 months (£34 thereafter.).

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has tonight announced the winners of their 20th annual 2018 internet industry awards, which among other things saw Hyperoptic scoop the top spot for the ‘Best Superfast Broadband‘ category and Gigaclear named as the ‘Best Rural Broadband‘ ISP.. again.

A 70 year old customer of Unicom (aka – Universal Utilities, VERASTAR, Kinex etc.), who claims to rarely ever use her mobile phone, has had to battle the broadband ISP after she was hit with a staggering bill of £10K for allegedly gobbling 17 GigaBytes of mobile data in a single 8 hour window.

The Government has today published its response to the recent consultation on proposed amendments to the controversial 2016 Investigatory Powers Act, which among other things would force broadband ISPs to log the Internet Connection Records (ICR) of all their customers for up to 12 months.

The stated-owned telecoms operator JT Group (Jersey Telecom) has quietly confirmed that after 6 years they’ve finally completed the build of a new 1Gbps capable “ultrafast” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband ISP network on the English Channel Island of Jersey. Any old copper lines will soon be gone too.

New data from research group M-Lab and Cable.co.uk has revealed that for 2018 the United Kingdom delivered an average (mean) broadband download speed of just 18.57Mbps (up from 16.51Mbps in 2017) and ranks 35th fastest in the world (down from 31st) versus 200 other countries.

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority has put £5.6m toward supporting the launch of their new ‘Delivering Digital Connectivity Strategy’, which aims to “significantly improve mobile, broadband and public WiFi coverage, whilst securing future proof full fibre [FTTP] and 5G networks.”

Openreach (BT) has today unsurprisingly announced that Huawei and Nokia have been awarded key contracts to deliver the new electronics (headend) that will support their on-going “Fibre First” project, which aims to roll-out 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband to 3 million UK premises by the end of 2020.
