The Government’s National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has today published the United Kingdom’s first-ever National Infrastructure Assessment, which among other things calls for nationwide coverage of “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband by 2033 and for a related ‘National Broadband Plan‘ to be devised by Spring 2019.

Customers of BT’s pay TV platform in the United Kingdom should note that the broadband ISP’s related Smartphone app has just announced several new features, including the ability to download and access content on the go and multi-device support via ‘BT TV App Extra‘.

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has announced that their 350Mbps ultrafast broadband and cable TV network has now been extended to cover 35,000 premises in Leeds (West Yorkshire, England). Next on their list to benefit is Cleckheaton, Micklefield and Osmondthorpe (plus more of Rothwell) during 2018. Plus some for Scotland.

SSE Enterprise Telecoms has this morning announced that their UK fibre optic network will be extended to another 180,000 UK business post codes by unbundling 177 extra BT Exchanges. Apparently the operator’s 13,700km “dark-fibre like” network will also be capable of delivering up to 100Gbps to each exchange.

The Scottish Government’s recently announced plan to plough £25m into a 4G Infill Programme (here), which aims to improve rural mobile coverage (mostly across the ‘Highlands & Islands’ region) by building a network of new masts, has chosen WHP Telecoms to be its contract supplier.

Two influential investment advisers – The Investment Association (IA) and Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) – have encouraged investors in TalkTalk’s UK broadband ISP business to oppose the re-election of Executive Chairman, Sir Charles Dunstone, after a controversial £200m share placing (19.99% of existing stock).

The latest independent model has estimated that the coverage of fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) ISP networks across the United Kingdom has grown to 95.3% at the end of June 2018 (up from 95.1% in March 2018), while “full fibre” (FTTP/H) networks now reach 3.82% of premises.

Residents of the Coleham district in the town of Shrewsbury (Shropshire, UK) have moaned after a new “fibre broadband” (FTTC / VDSL2) street cabinet was removed by Openreach following complaints from the local Christian Science Society, which objected to the fact that it blocked the view of their sign.

The incumbent ISP for Hull (East Yorkshire), KCOM, has today announced the next areas (approximately 10,000 premises) to benefit from the on-going rollout of their “ultrafast” (Gigabit capable) Lightstream pure fibre optic broadband (FTTP) network.

Internet provider Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) have complemented their recent trial of a G.fast based ultrafast broadband product today by launching a new 160Mbps (30Mbps upload) capable tier for Openreach (BT) based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology, which was previously only available at speeds of up to 80Mbps.

Telecommunications (mobile, broadband ISP and phone) providers have this year given a poor showing in the top 50 UK customer satisfaction index, although two Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) did at least make it into the top list. The highest ranked was Tesco Mobile at 7th, while giffgaff trailed far behind in 44th.

Investment from the Dorchester Business Improvement District (BID), local councils and Brewery Square has enabled a free public WiFi wireless internet network to be deployed by a company called Fusion Wi-Fi across Dorchester’s town centre in Dorset (England).

An unspecified network problem has been preventing TalkTalk’s broadband ISP customers from accessing any servers belonging to the website hosting company UK2.net since earlier this morning. At the time of writing nobody appears to know quite when it will be resolved.

Alternative network ISP Boundless Networks has teamed-up with Networx3 to bring 1Gbps capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet services to businesses in the town of Haslingden (Lancashire, England), specifically those based on the Courtyard business site along Grane Road.

Rural fibre optic broadband ISP Gigaclear has claimed that fever over the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia is turning into “white-hot rage over terrible internet connections.” Meanwhile mobile operator EE saw broadband usage “drop drastically” throughout all matches, while 4G mobile traffic did the opposite.

As such Ofcom’s review of related services, which sets out their key decisions and a 5 year plan for the spectrum, is very important.

The ITS Technology Group, which has built a mix of fibre optic and wireless broadband ISP networks around the UK, has secured another round of investment from private equity firms. The new funding will be used to support the growth and commercialisation of their “full fibre” network in metro and rural areas.
