UK ISP Sky Broadband appears to have enhanced their existing package discounts for new customers by introducing a £100 reward card (Prepaid Mastercard), which is available across all three of their primary unlimited broadband (ADSL, FTTC) and phone line rental bundles.

British Fibre Networks, which launched earlier this year (here) with an aspiration to build a new open access 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to serve over 35% of UK new build homes by 2020, has now begun its first deployment on an apartment block in North Wales, for LW Group.

A little known fixed wireless ISP called Pembs WiFi has quietly begun to branch out by building their own 1000Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) “hyperfast broadband” network to cater for several rural villages in north Pembrokeshire (Wales, UK), which has its own layer2 capacity back to data centres in London.

Customers of mobile operator Vodafone‘s pay monthly 4G ‘Red Entertainment‘ plans will soon be able to enjoy cost free global roaming in a total of 77 destinations when a further 29 countries are added to the list, including some big locations such as the USA, South Africa, Canada and most of of the Caribbean.

Shropshire-based UK ISP Aquiss has today announced that they are to withdraw the ADSL and ADSL2+ based copper line broadband packages from sale to new customers from 31st December 2018. The provider will instead focus on selling faster hybrid-fibre (FTTC) and full fibre (FTTP / GPON) based services.

Cable broadband ISP and TV operator Virgin Media has today become the latest provider to confirm that customers will soon be hit by an annual price increase on their bills between October and November 2018, although they claim that the average rise is a little “lower than last year” (i.e. 4.5% in 2018 against 4.7% in 2017).

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that “where possible” they are now trying to block international Wangiri scam calls before they even reach users. On top of that they’re also pledging to “reimburse any victim who has incurred a charge” as a result of calling such a number.

The hunt for somebody to replace the outgoing CEO of BT Group, Gavin Patterson, appears to have reached fever pitch, with reports on Sky News that the former boss of telecoms regulator Ofcom, Stephen Carter (Lord Carter of Barnes), has been approach to take over the position. But there are other candidates too.

After nearly two years Intel has finally published an advisory and formal CVE entry for a flaw in their Puma 5, 6 and 7 chipsets that resulted in various broadband ISP routers, such as Virgin Media UK’s Hub 3.0 (ARRIS TG2492S/CE), suffering from a mix of latency spikes and a DDoS security vulnerability.

The latest “scientific” H1 2018 examination of 4G and 3G mobile network operator performance across the United Kingdom, which was conducted by RootMetrics and IHS Markit, has today seen EE and Three UK come top with a quality score of 96 and 93 out of 100 (respectively).

The city of Sunderland in Tyne and Wear is the next to benefit from Virgin Media’s rollout of their cable ultrafast broadband and TV network, which currently covers half of the city and will now be extended to a further 7,000 premises. Separately VM has also updated their Virgin TV Go app with a download feature.

Some 400 homes residing within 6 kilometres of Llantilio Crossenny in Monmouthshire (Wales, UK) will be the next to benefit from fixed wireless superfast broadband via Broadway Partners, which will use the new long range TV White Space (TVWS) technology to deliver their internet connectivity.

Internet and hosting provider Freeola has followed the recent launch of their G.fast plans by adding a new range of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based home “ultrafast broadband” packages to their line-up, which offer average peak time download speeds of either 140Mbps or 290Mbps.
