A new research paper from Northumbria University has been published that details two examples of rural broadband connectivity schemes operating in Cumbria (England). The paper shows how adopting more innovative business models can successfully bring superfast broadband to some of the world’s most isolated areas.

A new open access fibre optic network operator called Fibrus has today been jointly established by b4b and entrepreneur Conal Henry in Northern Ireland. The operator plans to invest £100m+ over the next 5 years on improving business and residential connectivity, such as via a new Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network.

Cambridge, Leeds and Southend-on-Sea have today been named as the next 3 UK cities and towns to be covered via Cityfibre and Vodafone’s joint deployment of a new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network by the end of 2021. The rollout is being supported by an investment of £171m.

The latest uSwitch survey of 2,006 UK adults, which was conducted in September 2018, has suggested that Ofcom’s new end-of-contract notification letters could save mobile, phone and broadband ISP consumers £1bn+ a year. But there’s concern that the letters may also result in some being hit by early termination charges.

Rural focused fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has this evening apologised after it admitted that their state aid supported roll-out of a new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Devon and Somerset had suffered delays. As a result the deployment is now running “significantly behind schedule.”

The UK Government’s Health Secretary, Matt Hancock MP, has said that he believes “every single GP” should have access to a “full fibre” (e.g. FTTP) broadband connection and he wants Openreach (BT) to do the heavy lifting, albeit with the help of their Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS).

Newspaper reports have claimed that ISP BT are in early discussions with Apple over what could represent a significant shift in their Pay TV strategy within the United Kingdom, which might result in their EE mobile brand bundling Apple’s set-top-boxes with their home broadband and phone packages.

A new poll of 2,008 people in the South West, which was conducted by Censuswide on behalf of UK ISP TrueSpeed, has found that the desire for faster broadband outranks other vital local infrastructure investments such as new bus or rail links (44%), roads (42%) and more electric car charging points (22%).

PCCW Global Networks UK (formerly Keycom), which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hong Kong telco HKT and is 63% owned by PCCW, plans to further invest in the UK by growing its fibre broadband (FTTP/B) business to supply large, multi-tenanted properties and multiple businesses that are in close proximity.

Internet and UK web hosting provider Freeola has launched a new limited time offer, which will give new customers three months of “totally free” broadband but only if they pay for a full year in advance. The deal appears to be available across all of their internet access services (ADSL, FTTC, FTTP and G.fast).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has secured £700,000 from the Government’s new £10m Regulators’ Pioneer Fund in order to fuel a project that will seek to make it even quicker to switch broadband or phone provider, as well as to stop situations where switching may cause you to lose your phone number.

The on-going effort to improve rural superfast broadband and mobile network coverage has taken another twist after the UK Government’s Digital Minister, Margot James MP, said it was an “outrage” that some telecoms operators were slashing rents on their infrastructure to “derisory” low levels.

As expected mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve switch-on their first live UK trial of 5G based technology in Montgomery Square (Canary Wharf, London), which will test the new spectrum and related hardware devices for performance, wireless broadband speeds and coverage.

UK ISP Sky Broadband (Sky plc) has removed their FTTC based Sky Fibre Unlimited (36Mbps average download speed) and phone package from their line-up of bundles. Instead they retain only their 11Mbps standard broadband and 63Mbps Sky Fibre Max options, albeit at a further reduced monthly price.

A new report report from Sandvine has revealed that video streaming accounts for 57.69% of global online data traffic, with Netflix alone being responsible for 14.97% of the total downstream volume of traffic across the entire internet. On top of that some 50%+ of all traffic is now encrypted.

Mobile operator Three UK has today quietly removed the “Personal Hotspot” usage caps on their 4G mobile plans, which means that customers can now use all of their monthly data allowance to support Tethering (i.e. using your phone as a mobile broadband router for connecting other computers to the internet via WiFi etc.).

Trouble seems to be brewing in Maldon after councillors on the District Council’s Finance Committee were said to have voted unanimously to ask the full council to scrap its deal for helping to fund the roll-out of “superfast broadband” with Essex County Council, which would have contributed £45,000 to the effort.
