Business broadband and communications provider Onecom, which recently secured a £100m funding package from LDC and Ares Management Corporation to help accelerate their “organic and inorganic growth ambitions” (here), has announced their intention to recruit a further 125 workers as part of their expansion.

Mobile operator Three UK, specifically their Three Wholesale division, has today announced their first pilot of a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN / LPWA), which is intended to form the foundation for an eventual nationwide roll-out in order to help connect Internet of Things (IoT) devices (e.g. remote sensors, smart devices etc.).

Cable operator Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has today announced that the second UK city area to benefit from their new 1Gbps broadband speed upgrade is Greater Manchester, which is set to benefit around 500,000 premises in the area and follows Southampton (100,000 premises) as their first city last month.

UK ISP Aquiss has begun offering free activation on all of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based unlimited superfast broadband plans for small businesses, which reflects a one-off saving of £100 +vat on the previous standard charge.

UK ISP Sky Broadband (Comcast) has today officially made their new G.fast powered Ultrafast 1 (145Mbps) broadband and VoIP (SOGEA) phone packages available for both new and existing customers to order. Prices start from £39 per month and there’s a £39.95 one-off setup fee (we think it’s a free upgrade for existing customers).

Which? has conducted a detailed piece of qualitative research into consumer engagement within the UK’s broadband ISP market, which perhaps unsurprisingly found that 20% of people view the market as complex (more than any other sector) and 48% view switching packages as risky (again, more than any other sector).

UK ISPs that make use of Openreach’s network via their “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products may be pleased to learn that the operator has discounted the price of their 10Gbps Cablelink services, which helps to provide the capacity for such full fibre connections.

UK ISP County Broadband, which last year raised £46 million from Aviva to help it rollout a new Gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the rural East of England region, has today confirmed that their build plan will cover 50 rural villages by Q2 2020 (reaching 15,000 total homes passed).

Axione UK, which is a subsidiary of French communications provider Axione S.A.S, has revealed that they’re planning to deploy a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based Gigabit-capable broadband network in the United Kingdom, which would be made available for other ISPs to harness via wholesale. All eyes on Scotland.

Business communications provider Digital Wholesale Solutions (formerly Daisy Group), which also supplies a number of ISPs, has announced that they can now also take advantage of Cityfibre’s new Gigabit speed “full fibre” broadband and Dark Fibre / Ethernet network across 27 UK towns and cities.

The BT Group has flicked the full implementation switch on their new branding today, after first announcing the change in May 2019 (here). As a result their new logo has now completely replaced the old one across their various estates, sites and products.

The RIPE Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC), which manages regional distribution of internet addresses for the UK, Europe, Middle East and parts of Central Asia, has confirmed that their final reserve pool of Internet Protocol v4 (IPv4) addresses will completely run out in November 2019.

A new study, by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and Chapman University, has examined the impact of forcing UK broadband ISPs to block individual piracy websites (via court order) and discovered that it caused a decrease in overall piracy, as well as a 7 to 12% increase in the use of legal subscription sites.

A new report from the UK Spectrum Policy Forum and Real Wireless helps to highlight some of the challenges this could create.

The Welsh Government has confirmed £4 million to support the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Centre of Excellence at Bangor University, which among other things will look at ways to harness existing fibre optic technology in the 5G network to “improve capacity, flexibility, functionality and services.”

The Culture Secretary, Nicky Morgan MP, has confirmed that the Government is still focused upon delivering “gigabit-capable” broadband to all by the end of 2025. The target appeared to be cast into doubt earlier this week after a briefing on the Queen’s Speech (here) adopted the vague wording “as soon as possible.“
