The UK Government’s (DCMS) Building Digital UK team, which is responsible for implementing much of their “full fibre” and gigabit broadband deployment plans, has begun piloting a new consumer led (instead of supplier led) approach for the Rural Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme.

The Dorset County Council (DCC) has this week become the latest in a string of local authorities to invest £1m into a “top up” scheme alongside the UK Government’s £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme, which helps properties in the most remote rural locations to access ultrafast broadband.

Existing customers of cable TV and ultrafast broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) have this week begun receiving a new email from the operator, which informs them of “a little good news” and reveals that they “won’t see any other price rise in 2020.” The provider normally hikes prices annually by around 5% (average).

A new Opinium survey has found that the loss of electricity for longer than 24 hours would be the biggest “inconvenience” for those surveyed in the East of England (76%), which is followed by the broadband link going down (9%), fridge not working (8%), loss of central heating (5%) and the car failing to start (3%).

A new survey of from low cost ISP TalkTalk has claimed that nearly two thirds (62%) of British people admit they would consider NOT buying a house if it didn’t have a “strong, reliable internet connection,” although they neglect to define what “strong” means (we suspect it’s likely to vary from person to person).
