Strike Threatened BT Gift GBP1500 COVID Bonus to 59000 Staff UPDATE

As the threat of a national strike looms large (here), BT has today proposed to offer around 59,000 frontline UK workers a “special bonus” of £1,500 to recognise their efforts in helping to keep customers and the country connected to broadband, phone and mobile services during the pandemic.

The state aid supported Superfast West Yorkshire and York (SFWYY) programme, which is working alongside Openreach (BT) to extend the availability of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services, has announced that some homes in the rural town of Todmorden have now gained access to their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today launched a new UK ISP sibling that is being aimed specifically at small businesses – called ‘Sky Connect‘, although at launch they’ll only be offering packages based off “superfast broadband” Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) technology from Openreach. But FTTP will follow “later this year“.

Last year we reported that smaller full fibre building alternative UK broadband network providers (AltNets) were furious after Openreach imposed a “punitive” new fee on those using Ethernet (e.g. EAD) products to feed their FTTP service to end-users (here). You had to do some digging to find it, but Ofcom has chosen to uphold this.
