Openreach Engineers Repair Storm Damage 2022

The Wiltshire Council (WC) in England has apologised to residents of around 100 homes in the rural villages of Ablington and Figheldean after their contractors accidentally cut one of Openreach’s (BT) core broadband and phone cables, which has left locals disconnected for much of the past week.

Fibre optic network builder CityFibre, which is currently deploying a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover around 8 million UK premises by the end of 2025 (here), has signed a new £100m agreement to extend their existing supply deal for passive fibre optic solutions with Hexatronic.

Mobile operator and broadband ISP Vodafone UK has today unveiled new changes that aim to encourage customers to repair, trade-in and recycle their old mobiles. In addition, the operator’s programme of refurbishing and reusing fixed line routers and TV boxes in Germany, Portugal and Spain will be “expanded to further markets.”

Last year the national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, estimated that 44.6 million UK people may have received scam calls and text messages during just the three months of summer (here), with 2% of recipients being duped by them. In response, the regulator has today proposed changes to tackle the use of fake phone numbers.

CityFibre has today confirmed that they’re investing £27m to deploy their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to homes and businesses in the West Yorkshire (England) city of Wakefield, which is a location that was quietly removed from their rollout plan back in 2020.

The Scottish Government has today launched a new Open Market Review (OMR), which forms part of the UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout and aims to identify which areas will need state aid support to help spread the availability of gigabit speed networks “nationwide” by 2030.

UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has this morning sweetened the existing discounts on their ultrafast broadband and phone bundles, which knocks a few extra pounds off the previous offer. Packages now start at just £25 per month for a speed of 108Mbps (10Mbps upload) with free setup (usually £35) and included weekend calls.

Storm Eunice struck the UK today, bringing with it winds gusting up to 80-90mph across large parts of South England and Wales, as well as rain, high seas and – in some parts of Scotland – heavy snowfall. The event has unsurprisingly also caused damage to telecoms (broadband and mobile) infrastructure, resulting in outages.

The winners of the annual Uswitch.com Mobile Awards 2022 have just been unveiled, which among other things saw giffgaff win the “Network of the Year” award again, while Tesco Mobile scooped “Best Network for Customer Service” and Three UK was named the “Best Network for Data“.
