Gigaclear Extend Rural FTTP Broadband to 300,000 UK Premises

Infracapital-backed broadband ISP Gigaclear has this afternoon claimed that their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which tends to target rural parts of England, has now covered 300,000 premises (up from 250,000 in December 2021).

Following last year’s successful lab tests, Nokia has brought their future 100G PON (Passive Optical Network) technology to be showcased at the “Fiber Connect” event in Nashville (USA). The new kit is capable of delivering full fibre 100Gbps speeds in downstream on a single PON wavelength in a real-world environment.

The UK Government has published their ‘Digital Strategy’, which reflects a “new plan” to grow the “digital economy” (i.e. addressing tech sector skills, investment and infrastructure). But in terms of mobile and broadband infrastructure, it’s largely another re-announcement of existing schemes (not unlike the ‘Levelling Up‘ plan).

Openreach (BT) has hinted that, for the first time, new installations of their hybrid Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) broadband ISP lines may soon start to shrink, which would partly reflect the rising coverage of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

Alternative network ISP Lit Fibre, which is building a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to reach 500,000 homes by 2026, has today added six new UK towns to their rollout plan. The move brings the total number of homes in towns under deployment to over 200,000 – just 9 months after their first build.

Vodafone Claims to be UK’s Largest Full Fibre Broadband ISP UPDATE

Vodafone today claims to have “overtaken” BT to become the UK’s “largest full fibre broadband provider” via their Gigafast Broadband plans, but they aren’t referring to customer figures (1 million). Instead, this reflects the fact that they now sell gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) plans via both Openreach and CityFibre.
