Network builder Netomnia – supported by UK broadband ISP partner YouFibre – has today added four new towns in England and Scotland to their national rollout of a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network, which includes Mansfield, Purfleet, Bedford and Coatbridge.

Mobile testing firm RootMetrics, which was last year acquired by Ookla (here), has today published their biannual H1 2022 study of mobile network (4G and 5G) and broadband performance across the United Kingdom, which sees EE collecting the most awards. But rival Three UK is threatening to pull ahead in 5G.

Residents in the large Fife (Scotland, UK) village of East Wemyss have succeeded in petitioning Openreach (BT) to remove several of its recently deployed telegraph poles. The poles were built to help bring full fibre (FTTP) broadband to the area, but locals found them “obtrusive” and feared the value of their homes might suffer.

The UK market for broadband-based video streaming services, which is already under pressure from the ever-increasing problem of content fragmentation across too many platforms, looks set to suffer another blow today after Amazon announced that prices for their Prime Video would be hiked for the first time since 2014.

A new study of 1,500 London based pensioners, which was conducted by Perspectus Global in July 2022 and commissioned by Age UK and ISP CommunityFibre, has claimed that 43% of those over the age of 60 are “struggling to pay for internet access” via broadband and mobile data services as a result of the cost-of-living crisis.

Infracapital-backed rural broadband ISP Gigaclear is reportedly working with bankers at Rothschild to raise up to £300m of additional capital to help fuel their ongoing rollout of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) infrastructure, which has so far covered 300,000 premises (up from 250,000 in December 2021).

Most of Shell Energy’s broadband and phone customers in the UK have been informed that the ISP will hike their prices by an average of 6.1% a month from 1st September 2022. But those who joined or renewed on or after 9th January 2022 will escape the hike, which is at least mercifully below the current rate of CPI inflation (9.4%).

New research has analysed 5,292 mobile data (mobile broadband) plans from across 233 countries in order to compare the cost of a 1GB (GigaByte) data allowance, which found that the United Kingdom has improved its rank from 78th in 2021 to 59th in 2022, with an average price of USD $0.79 per GB (down from $1.42).

The UK Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has today set aside £25m as part of their new Future Open Networks Research Challenge (FONRC) fund to help support the development of future 5G and 6G based mobile broadband equipment (focused primarily on O-RAN).

Broadband and mobile giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have agreed to supply a further 15 million GigaBytes (GB) of free data to the Good Things Foundation’s National Databank, which gifts free mobile broadband data to community groups and the people they support to aid internet connectivity – either via SIM cards or vouchers.

Budget conscious UK ISP TalkTalk appears to have begun a new programme trial, which is giving “some” existing customers a free automatic upgrade to full fibre broadband – provided they don’t already have such a package and are covered by the new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Network builder CityFibre has today announced that they will begin upgrading their national UK GPON based full fibre broadband ISP network to harness XGS-PON technology from April 2023, which will enable them to offer symmetrical download and upload speeds of up to 10Gbps – Gigabits per second (9.953Gbps to be exact).

London-focused gigabit-broadband ISP G.Network has signed a “City Wide Wayleave” (legal land access) agreement with the Hackney Council in London, which will see them build their new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover public housing in the borough.

Satellite broadband firm OneWeb, which is British-registered and partly owned by the UK Government, is about to sign a merger deal with existing investor and rival French operator Eutelsat. But the UK is understood to have secured a number of concessions to help protect its strategic investment.

Vodafone UK has just published their latest Q1 FY23 results, which reveals that their fixed broadband base grew again to total 1,072,000 customers (up by 22k in the quarter vs 59k in Q4 FY22) and their mobile base also increased to total 17.22m (up by 115k vs 51k in the previous quarter).

The Competition Appeal Tribunal‘s (CAT) decision last week to reject CityFibre’s appeal against Ofcom’s approval process for Openreach’s “Equinox” price cut (here), which slashed the cost of the incumbent’s wholesale FTTP broadband products for UK ISPs, may not have been a total loss for the alternative network operator.

Hull-based UK broadband ISP KCOM has, thus far, been fairly quiet on the operator’s plans to withdraw their older copper-based broadband (ADSL and VDSL) and phone (PSTN) products. But a recent update, which was given to their wholesale customers, appears to have included a solid indication of the likely timeline.
