Rural broadband ISP Gigaclear, which has so far deployed their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 300,000 premises across England, is on-track to cover 2,500 homes in the Gloucestershire town of Lydney after it deployed specialist engineering to drill under a historic railway line. But it may go further than that.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator EE has today announced that they’ve teamed up with the Money Adviser Network to offer customers free, independent debt advice through referrals from customer service advisors. Nearly 3,000 customers are said to have so far benefitted from the service since its rollout in June 2022.

Macquarie Capital-backed UK ISP Voneus, which holds a “near term” plan to cover 100,000 homes in rural areas with their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network (here), has today appointed the ex-commercial director at BT Enterprise, Francesca Lee, to be their new Chief Commercial Officer (CCO).

A new business grant scheme, which has injected just under £1.4 million into the local Cambridgeshire and Peterborough economy in England, has already helped local firms to create 42 new-to-the-firm products and enabled 32 businesses to access faster broadband speeds in excess of 30Mbps.

The move is being promoted as a “bid to help ease pressures on household bills this winter“, but it’ll also help with take-up.

A new Censuswide survey of 2,001 UK adults (aged 16+) that have broadband, which was commissioned by ISP Zen Internet and conducted during May 2022, has found that 32% of respondents still aren’t confident they can define what “full fibre” is – that’s up from 28% when the same question was asked in 2021.

The British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, appears set to confirm earlier reports that she will make it easier for UK network operators and ISPs to tackle the ongoing shortage of skilled fibre broadband engineers by allowing the telecoms sector (as well as other industries) to hire more staff from abroad.

The UK Chancellor, Kwasi Kwarteng, has today published a new Growth Plan 2022, which proposes to “liberate the private sector” by encouraging investment (i.e. removing barriers to the flow of private capital) and boosting infrastructure by “liberalising the planning system and streamlining consultation and approval requirements“.

New alternative network operator Spring Fibre has announced that they’ve secured an investment of “up to” £155 million from R&M’s (River and Mercantile) Infrastructure business, which will support their plan to build a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 1 million premises in England.

Sky (Sky TV, Sky Broadband etc.) has denied a recent report claiming it had informed its trade suppliers that they would cease installing “new” satellite TV dishes on customer homes by the end of 2023, which was believed to reflect their increasing adoption of broadband internet based IPTV (video streaming etc.) delivery methods.
