Network operator nexfibre has today announced that they’ve expanded their 2Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) broadband network, alongside partner UK ISP Virgin Media (VMO2), to cover an additional 11,000 premises in the Essex town of Braintree.

Telecoms and broadband giant BT has today signed a 10-year partnership, worth £70m, to upgrade the IT and network services of both the Devon & Cornwall Police and Dorset Police forces. The two forces currently handle more than 1 million emergency and non-emergency calls and respond to more than 118,000 incidents of recorded crime each year.

The Cardiff Council (Gyngor Caerdydd) in South Wales has once again chosen UK broadband operator Telcom Group (WeFibre, HyperCity etc.) to supply residents and businesses in poorly served parts of the city with “hyperfast gigabit connectivity“, which forms Phase 2 of an earlier Phase 1 roll-out.

New data from telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has revealed that, at the end of Q1 2024, nearly 7 million UK premises had access to two or more full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP networks, falling to just 0.8m for three or more networks. Some 64.7% of UK premises (20.7m) are now covered by such a network, while Altnets are still seeing good growth.

A new report from strategic consultancy firm Eight Advisory has examined the question of why the average consumer take-up across alternative full fibre (FTTP) broadband networks (Altnet) is currently still at 16%, while Openreach stands at c.34%, despite the collective footprint of the new challengers now equalling that of the incumbent.

Broadband and mobile giant Virgin Media O2 has teamed-up with IT services company Accenture to boost their 5G private network capabilities for UK businesses, which may help them to “seize opportunities” in the country’s growing mobile private network market – estimated to reach £528 million by 2030 (STL Partners forecast).

Mobile operator Three UK has today revealed that the anti-spam filters on their network have blocked more than 173 million spam texts, equivalent to 10,000 every hour of the day, in the last two years, as part of its efforts to protect customers from rising online fraud – thanks in no small part to their Mavenir platform.

Network operator CityFibre has this morning revealed that their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network has now grown to cover 3.6 million UK premises (3.3m RFS), which is up slightly from 3.5m (3.2m RFS) in late January 2024. The network is also home to 400,000 customer connections (up 77% year-on-year).

Mobile network operator giffgaff has recently launched a temporary new 40GB (data) contract deal for just £12 a month on an 18-month term – available to both new and existing customers, which also comes with free UK texts, calls and 5GB of inclusive EU roaming allowance.

The Zayo Group, which operates a large global high-capacity metro and long-haul fibre optic network, has today begun the process of carving out two independent entities from their business. One will consist of Zayo’s European business, while the other will encompass its business that manages customers’ global network needs (outside of their core North American and European networks).

Oxfordshire-based alternative UK broadband network and ISP Zzoomm, which have built their 2Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 190,000 premises (RFS) in England, has revealed that their network has already achieved a take-up rate of 10% in the South Yorkshire town of Penistone – after only going live in March 2024.

Network operator Freedom Fibre, which has so far built a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 300,000 UK premises (27th Mar 2024) – mostly in the North West of England, has distributed litter picking kits across North Shropshire to both help keep the region tidy and support their social commitment under last year’s Project Gigabit contract.

A recent Freedom of Information Request (FoIR) filed by Broadband Genie has revealed that complaints to Ofcom about UK telecoms providers (broadband, mobile etc.) increased by 37% last year to 34,000. In response, the comparison site has published a new survey of customer service, which sees YouFibre, Trooli and Zen Internet top the table.

Broadband, mobile and TV giant Virgin Media O2 has this morning revealed that they reduced their carbon emissions by 23% last year (or 45% since its baseline in 2020). At the same time, they also increased their fleet of Electric Vehicles (EV) to 281 – edging them toward their target to transition to a fully EV fleet by 2030 (c. 4,300 vehicles).
