A new report has claimed that telecoms infrastructure providers in the UK’s mobile network sector are using “new tactics” to secure more favourable lease renewals on mast sites. The tactic is said to be enticing landowners to negotiate without professional representation (i.e. risking agreements that reduce rents or overlook key protections).

The SpeedGeo project, which compares global internet quality by benchmarking the connection speeds of real users, has published their 2026 results for the United Kingdom. The outcome once again awards Virgin Media as the fastest broadband ISP, while Three UK came top for mobile broadband (4G, 5G etc.). But some big names are missing.

Hampshire-based alternative network toob, which has deployed their own gigabit speed full fibre (FTTP) broadband network across South England and also harnesses CityFibre’s network in other UK areas, has today launch several new packages (including speeds up to 2.3Gbps) and a new WiFi 7 router. But it’s not all good news as they’ve also changed their pricing policy.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that they’ve switched-on their next-generation 5G Standalone (5GSA / 5G+) mobile broadband network in Surrey (England), which is said to reach “up to” 1.2 million residents across 33 large towns, 48 smaller towns and 194 rural villages.

Digital entertainment platform Netgem TV has today announced that their latest UltraHD (4K) IPTV box – PLEIO, which includes support for the UK’s newest broadband-based live TV streaming service (Freely), will now return to adopting a “permanent” price of £99 and has also added new video games, as well as some extra TV channels.

The not-for-profit and industry-funded One Touch Switching Company (TOTSCo), which is responsible for helping to deliver Ofcom’s solution for easier and quicker switching between UK fixed broadband and phone providers on different networks (One Touch Switching), has confirmed price reductions for their new TOTSCo Business Switching Solution.

Alternative UK broadband operator FullFibre Limited, which in 2023 acquired rival Digital Infrastructure (BeFibre) and in 2025 completed its merger with Zzoomm (here), has now apparently solved its “IPv4 shortage” (internet addresses) with netElastic’s software and will be returning excess IPv4 blocks with the use of CGNAT (IP address sharing) being projected to save 40% over 3 years.

Carlisle-based alternative broadband ISP Grain (Grain Connect), which has already built their point-to-point full fibre (FTTP) network to cover 270,000 UK premises (aiming for 600,000 in the future) and in 2025 secured a £225m funding boost (here), has issued a brief update to confirm that the Derbyshire (England) town of Long Eaton will be the next to get their network.

Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of its parentage with broadband ISP Virgin Media (they harness the same build teams), has today confirmed another batch of seven locations and regions across the UK that will benefit from an upgrade to their latest full fibre (FTTP, XGS-PON) broadband technology. Technically it should be 8 locations, but we already wrote about one.

AST SpaceMobile BlueWalker 3 Satellite with Earth

The joint plan by Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile (aka – Satellite Connect Europe) to launch a space-based 4G and 5G mobile (mobile broadband) service – that will connect with regular Smartphones – has suffered a setback, which occurred after Sunday’s orbital launch of a BlueBird 7 spacecraft on the New Glenn rocket ended up placing the satellite into the wrong orbit.

Customers of mobile network operator Three UK (VodafoneThree) were given quite the surprise yesterday afternoon after the provider suddenly notified them, without any prior warning, that they would be introducing mobile broadband (4G, 5G) speed caps of between 25Mbps and 100Mbps (Megabits per second) across various plans from the same date.

Consumer magazine Which? has published the results from their latest UK mobile network satisfaction survey, which questioned 5,137 adult customers in January 2026 about their chosen UK mobile phone operator (mix of Which? Connect panel and members of the public). Overall, Talkmobile topped the table with a customer satisfaction score of 83%, while Three UK placed last on just 65%.

At the start of January 2026 a mobile phone mast in the Pembrokeshire (Wales) seaside town of Tenby suddenly disappeared, leaving locals to suffer extremely poor service quality no matter what network they used (some areas even have no signal at all). At the same time some mobile operators continued to deny there was even a problem, until very recently.

Network operator Openreach (BT) has said it’s “very sorry for the distress” after one of its engineers accidentally drilled through a water pipe during the installation of a new broadband service, which flooded the house of a 93-year-old pensioner (Dylis Forsyth) in Kent (England). Ms Forsyth ended up slipping on the wet carpet the next day and badly injuring her hand.

Network operator nexfibre, which shares some of its parentage with Virgin Media (harnessing the same build engine), has today announced a £2.9 million investment in the large County Durham (England) town of Darlington to help upgrade 18,000 homes to full fibre (FTTP) broadband. The work is linked to the planned acquisition of altnet Netomnia.

A number of UK broadband and mobile operators, such as Vodafone, iD Mobile and more, work with a company called Giftcloud to help incentivise new customers to sign-up by offering high value gift cards. But recently we’ve seen a spike in complaints as some customers have struggled to get their promised gift cards, while attempts to reach support often go without a response.

The UK telecoms operator, BT, has confirmed that the subsea cable repair ship (Pierre de Fermat) they contracted to resolve the recent fibre optic break between Evie on the Orkney Mainland and nearby Westray, which disrupted local broadband and 4G mobile connectivity, is set to be fully resolved on Saturday (18th April).
