£70m High Speed Broadband Project in Wales Gets New Supplier After Error

The Welsh Government (WG) has revealed that an “unforeseen administrative error” meant they neglected to name one of the approved suppliers for their £70m (public subsidy) Extending High Speed Broadband (EHSB) project when the original list was announced earlier this year (here). The supplier, BB4W Ltd (Broadband 4 Wales), has now been added to the framework.

nPerf Ranks UK 3rd for Mobile Streaming Performance vs Countries of Similar GDP

French benchmarking firm nPerf has today published the results from another quirky study of mobile broadband networks, which compared mobile video streaming performance among countries with comparable Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita. Overall the UK came in 3rd place, behind Germany and France.

O2 UK Switches On 5G Standalone Mobile Broadband Network in Kent

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today confirmed that they’ve switched-on their next-generation 5G+ (5G Standalone) mobile broadband network across more of Kent in England, which is said to reach “up to” 1.6 million residents across 125 towns, 303 villages and 246 hamlets – delivering “faster speeds, better coverage and lower latency at no extra cost“.

Much we first previewed on Monday of this week (here), EE Mobile (BT) has today officially launched their new ‘Fast Lane‘ feature, which is described as being the UK’s first commercial consumer implementation of Network Slicing technology on a 5G+ (5G Standalone) mobile broadband network (i.e. giving customers data traffic prioritisation in busy areas).

APFN Introduce Multi-Gig Ethernet Services with Cashback Incentive via Sky

The AllPoints Fibre Network (APFN), which is a wholesale platform that aggregates connectivity from several different UK full fibre networks, has announced that their partners (ISPs and network operators) can now benefit from a cashback incentive – worth up to £1,500 – on certain Ethernet services from Sky Business Wholesale ordered through their aquila platform.

Alchemy Partners Set to Support Opus Broadband’s Bid for UK ISP TalkTalk

At the start of this month we reported that TalkTalk’s debt-strained consumer broadband division, which has been up for sale for a while, was now understood to be fielding interest from Opus Broadband, in addition to Vodafone and possibly others. The latest development is that investment firm Alchemy Partners is reportedly backing Opus to make a c.£250m bid for the ISP.

Network operator Openreach has this week launched a new enhancement to their Optical Spectrum Extended Access (OSEA) portfolio, which will enable UK data centres and telecoms operators to deploy higher-capacity connectivity between sites with support for multiple wavelengths each carrying up to 1.6Tbps (Terabits per second) of capacity.

Openreach Expands UK Rollout of 10Gbps Speed Full Fibre XGS-PON Broadband UPDATE

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has this morning announced that they intend to expand their ongoing pilot of 10Gbps capable XGS-PON based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which over the next 12 months will be made available to “more than a million premises” across the United Kingdom. But a third of its full fibre network could be covered over the next 5 years.
