I migrated from Pipex to PlusNet last July - day proposed sale to Tiscali was announced.
I've been more than happy with my choice of a new ISP ( I was with Pipex for over 5 years) and have subsequently transferred my phone line to them.
When I migrated I also moved from a 2Mb fixed speed connection to max and, albeit over 3km from exchange, have been getting a stable 6Mb for quite some time.
From having a limited customer portal, at Pipex, it's really nice to see proper details of my usage and other account details and also have a ticket system should it be needed.
The community site is very handy as is http://usergroup.plus.net/home.php.
I've not really needed much contact with customer services but when I have I've found them to be both contactable and helpful.
Overall a good ISP that has sufficient confidence to only require a monthly contract.
Like the two earlier posters I have been checking out this site to find an alternative ISP having been with PlusNet for over 3 years.
Customer service today is not what it was, on two recent occasions I would actually call them abusive.
Speeds used to be good but are now sluggish and a recent problem all but terminated by access for about 5 days with sub 100k speeds making it very hard to use the automated tests that are required to report a fault. (And this for an Option4 29.99 service so not peanuts)
That particular fault was one of theirs and they never bothered to respond to the initial queries. And they still haven't fixed it properly speeds still being well down (but 2Mb compared to 2k at one point - as reported by the BT Speedchecker - is bliss. There are alternatives out there at lower cost for the equivalent service.
I've been with Plusnet for over 5 years and up until this year the service was fine.
Since May I've had problems with my line, dropping every 5 - 10 mins at times, and very low connection speeds. I know all network have problems at times, but the PlusNet response has been terrible.
They do answer the phone quite quickly, but their focus then seems to be on moving the support issue on to some other internal status - they don't seem to focus on getting the line actually fixed! When I took this up with them they claimed that they are giving good service as each time they move it from the current status to another which resets their support metric clock, so its always being worked on. I tried escalating the issue to Plusnet management, but could not get them to respond.
My advise is if depend on your ADSL line don't use an ISP which does not have some target measure of the time to fix a fault.
I have been happy paying extra for the Plusnet service believing I would get higher level of support. This is not the case, the support staff are not able to arrange to resolve issues in a reasonable time frame (5May until today and its still not fixed...)
I've been with these guys for many years, and in that time have recommended them to many clients, colleagues & friends.
However, support is not what it used to be, and performance has been in steady decline - latency in particular has been terrible in the last couple of months. Approximately 10% of pages fail to respond before timeout; you need to re-request the page very frequently. Once you've got a connection the speed doesn't seem too bad. They never were the cheapest provider, but I was always prepared to pay a little premium for decent service and support. Now they just feel outright expensive.
The nail in the coffin for me has been their recent change to Postini spam filtering. It is so aggresive, even on the lowest available setting, that I've had no option but to turn it off. This is extremely painful as I use a metered Vodafone connection to retrieve mail while travelling and having to turn off spam filtering due to the insane proportion of false positives (i've had BA eTickets, Avis booking confirmations, BMI eTickets all blocked in addition to several personal contacts unable to email me) is costing me money. The support tell me to whitelist domains; the only reliable whitelist that will work is turning the function off altogether! Honestly, I don't understand why they won't configure it to allow a lower setting that would actually be usable. Ok it will let some spam through. I wouldn't mind that. False positives are the real problem.
Seriously looking for an alternate supplier; primary reason I'm here on this site looking for an alternative...
