The UK Valuation Office Agency (VOA) appears to have proposed a new way of taxing Next Generation Access (NGA) fibre optic broadband lines in rural areas where public subsidies are required. The move, if implemented, could result in smaller ISPs being taxed in a similar way to big operators.

The latest consumer broadband speed testing statistics for UK ISPs shows that the overall average internet download speed has grown sharply from 5.685Mbps last year to 7.578Mbps now. Cable operator Virgin Media remains the fastest provider, although BT and Eclipse Internet also made significant gains.

BT has confirmed that a further five communities in Cornwall have been connected to superfast broadband as part of the wider £132 Million public and private sector partnership project, which aims to connect at least 80% (ideally 90%) of the regions homes and businesses by the end of 2014.
