Broadband ISP Eclipse Internet UK has submitted a list of 5 telephone exchanges that have been nominated by its customers for a fast-tracked 40-110Mbps "fibre optic based" broadband upgrade. This is an almost identical survey to the one being carried out by BT Retail (Race to Infinity), which is due to end in December.

The Labour MP for West Bromwich East, Tom Watson, has submitted an Early Day Motion (EDM) that seeks to force the UK government into reversing its course of support for a two tier internet that would shun Net Neutrality (principal of treating all internet traffic as equal).

Customers of Sky's ( Sky Broadband ) UK satellite TV service can now benefit from a huge reduction in the ISPs phone line (line rental) installation charge, which has been cut from £39 to just £10 until 22nd December 2010.

The UK Minister for Communications, Ed Vaizey, has supported proposals by Ofcom and Europe that would shun Net Neutrality (principal of treating all internet traffic as equal) and allow big broadband ISPs the power to favour some online content over others.

A study conducted by the new wholesale division of UK ISP Be Broadband (BE Wholesale) has found that two thirds of businesses believe poor internet connectivity is stifling new working practices. Existing broadband speeds, which are often far too slow, were also found to be impeding growth of the UK economy.

Satellite operator Avanti Communications UK has announced that the first of its next generation broadband satellites (HYLAS 1) has been fully fuelled and will be integrated with the Ariane 5 rocket tomorrow ahead of its Friday 26th November 2010 launch.

The UK government has finally set a date for when it will meet with ISPs to discuss the Valuation Office Agency's (VOA) controversial fibre optic broadband tax (Fibre Tax). This taxes the rateable value of the infrastructure and unfairly charges smaller providers significantly more than larger ones (BT).

Ofcom has given an interesting speech to the FT World Telecoms Conference, where it confirmed that the UK process of releasing super-fast (100Mbps+) LTE friendly next generation (4G) Mobile Broadband spectrum (800MHz and 2.6GHz) would not complete until "the end of 2013" (2014 for the first services).

A new study has warned that the UK could have to wait until 2015 before mobile operators start upgrading their Mobile Broadband networks with faster LTE technologies because, according to the latest research from Informa Telecoms & Media (ITM), it wouldn't be economically viable for them to do it sooner.

BT has issued an update on its nationwide 'Race to Infinity' survey, which seeks to gauge how much demand exists for its "super-fast" broadband services. The telephone exchange areas that receive the most responses (must be over 1000 votes) will benefit from a super-fast service upgrade by 2012.

Internet and phone provider TalkTalk ( AOL UK , Tiscali , Opal ) has revealed its half year (H1-2010) results to 30th September 2010, which saw their broadband ISP subscriber base grow from 4,231,000 in Q1-2010 to 4,249,000 (+18,000) in Q2. This represents yet another significant reduction in growth for TalkTalk, which added +42,000 in Q4-2009 and +34,000 in Q1-2010.

The European Parliament has warned that plans to force EU broadband ISPs into blocking or deleting websites that contain child abuse content, much like the Internet Watch Foundation ( IWF ) already does in the UK, may not be effective.
