Poole-based business ISP C4L UK has confirmed to the BBC that it plans to expand the coverage of its wireless broadband service, which was recently used to connect up the local
Bournemouth Air Show (
here), to include new locations across Bournemouth and
Blandford at the end of October 2010.
However C4L isn't stopping there and also hinted at plans to reach across
Christchurch,
Wimborne,
Ferndown and
Swanage in the coming months. Still, we are only aware of C4L offering its
Wireless Leased Line service to businesses and it remains unclear whether or not it will be expanded to include residential use.
C4L Managing Director, Matt Hawkins, said:
"It is only in the last year that I started going to network events and had the conversation so often where people say they can't do anything because of their connection. I thought, it's what I've been doing for the last ten years, it's easy to fix."
C4L's Wireless Leased Lines work by transmitting radio, microwave or laser technology frequencies to a receiver giving them a private, un-contended, high speed Internet connection. A similar solution (FiWi) is being used by some smaller ISPs to help connect rural areas with "
super-fast" broadband.
However prices for the current service, which offers a maximum
speed of up to 150Mbps, currently start at a whopping £145 +vat per month. That's fine for business use but it won't do for domestic connections.
UPDATE 21st October 2010C4L has now updated its website with a new section for the service, which lists domestic broadband prices that start at £14.99 per month for a 4Mbps connection in the Dorset and the Wessex regions. Good news for locals.
