The Guardian’s executive editor of investigations, David Leigh, has ignited a fresh debate by calling upon all broadband ISPs to force their customers into paying a “levy” of £2 a month per connection in order to help save the country’s struggling newspapers.

The Director of Virgin Media’s mobile division, Jamie Heywood, has confirmed that the operator is talking to EE (Everything Everywhere) about extending its existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) contract to include the forthcoming launch of superfast 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband technology.

Ofcom has approved BTOpenreach’s request to extend a connection price discount for its superfast broadband (FTTC) lines by two months, which cut the one-off cost from £80 to just £30 +vat when taken alongside a new phone line (WLR or MPF). Sadly only ISP customers in certain parts of England (UK) will benefit.

BT has announced that customers who take one of its superfast broadband BTInfinity (FTTC / P) packages (costing from just £18 a month) will from 26th October 2012 also get a FREE YouView set-top-box (normally £299) with no TV subscription fee. Except it’s not completely “free“.

Quickline Communications, which operates a fixed wireless broadband network around various parts of East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire (England), has signed a new wholesale agreement with OrbitalNet that will allow its service to reach customers in Kent and put it into direct competition with local rival Vfast. Sort of.

The government’s culture secretary, Maria Miller, has today confirmed the final funding allocations for 10 of the largest UK cities (including all four capitals) in its now £114.1m strong Urban Broadband Fund, which aims to support the roll-out of “ultrafast” (80-100Mbps) broadband ISP services and “high speed public wi-fi“.

Communications provider Goscomb Technologies has increased the usage allowances of its superfast broadband packages, which use Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) technology over BT’s 21CN network to deliver internet download speeds of up to 40Mbps (Megabits per second).

ISPreview.co.uk has learnt that Pulse DSL, a little known broadband provider for the UK market, quietly ceased trading during July 2012. Its website has now vanished but the ISP looks set to make a surprise comeback, albeit under a different brand.

Thankfully a new firmware is on the way and this one might just fix the device for good; but we did say “might“.
