UK ISP Zen Internet Cuts 76Mbps Superfast Broadband Install Prices by 25%

Popular ISP Zen Internet has today cut the installation price on “all” of its home and businesses focused superfast broadband (FTTC) packages by 25%, which marks a reduction from the original cost of £80 +vat to £60 +vat (i.e. £72 when you include VAT).

Customers who take a 12 month contract will also benefit from 2 months of free service (new customers) or free activation / migration.

CityFibre and Fujitsu Join Forces to Deploy Fibre Optic Broadband in UK Cities

CityFibre Holdings, which builds Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) style fibre optic infrastructure, has announced a new engineering agreement with Fujitsu that will progress their plans for deploying ultrafast broadband (100Mbps+) services “throughout the UK’s second tier cities” to reach 1 million homes and 50,000 businesses.

High Court Forces More UK ISPs to Block The Pirate Bay Piracy Website

The High Court of Justice (London) has today ruled that UK ISPs Sky Broadband, Everything Everywhere (Orange UK and T-Mobile), TalkTalk, O2 and Virgin Media must all follow BT in blocking The Pirate Bay, one of the world’s largest BitTorrent (P2P / File Sharing) tracker websites, because it allows internet copyright infringement (piracy) to take place.

Akamai Study Finds UK Average Broadband Speeds Fell to 4.9Mbps in 2011

Akamai‘s global Content Delivery Network (CDN) has released its latest State of the Internet Q4 2011 report, which found that the average global internet download speed had fallen to 2.3Mbps (Megabits \ sec) by the end of last year (down from 2.7Mbps in Q3-2011). The UK average speed also dropped to 4.9Mbps (down from 5.1Mbps in Q3).

NetGear, a global manufacturer of networking equipment, appears to have become the first in the industry to launch a home/office wireless broadband router based off the new 802.11ac dual band gigabit WiFi standard. As a result the R6300 claims to deliver “5th generation” wireless network connectivity at “gigabit speeds“.

UK ISP BT claims to have launched their “best ever broad band deal” by offering new customers 6 months of free broadband (up to 16Mbps speeds, 10GB usage, unlimited WiFi and free HomeHub router) with unlimited evening and weekend calls (£13 a month thereafter). An unlimited up to 76Mbps BTInfinity superfast broadband deal for £20 is also promoted.

Europe Aims to Cut Superfast Broadband Rollout Costs by 25%

The European Commission (EC) has today opened a new consultation that aims to cut the costs of broadband investment by 25% and thus make it cheaper to deploy new networks for “high speed internet” in the EU. Priority will be given to reducing the costs associated with civil engineering (i.e. digging up roads to lay fibre optic cable), which can account for up to 80% of the total cost.

Fixed Telecom Operators to Spend GBP33bn on Fibre Optic Rollouts by 2017

Consultancy firm Analysys Mason has estimated that fixed telecoms operators, specifically those in developed countries (Central and Eastern Europe, developed Asia–Pacific, North America and Western Europe), will over the next 5 year period (between 2012 and 2017) spend £33 billion (USD53.5bn) on the roll-out of new superfast fibre optic broadband networks (e.g. FTTH).

The Post Office UK Adjusts its Unlimited Broadband Package FUP to 100GB

The Post Office has announced that the Fair Usage Policy (FUP) on its Broadband Extra package, which claims to offer “unlimited monthly downloads“, will be changed from 1st June 2012 to impose a soft usage restriction of 100GB (GigaBytes) per month. Customers who repeatedly go beyond this will now be at risk from an unspecified reduction in their internet speeds.

Rural Hampshire UK Village Gets 40Mb Broadband via a Public Service Network

Residents of the aptly named rural village called Little London in Hampshire (England, UK), which could previously only receive internet download speeds of around 0.5Mbps (Megabits per second), can now access superfast broadband of up to 40Mbps thanks to a clever use of the local fibre optic Public Service Network (PSN).
