CityFibre Tout Anchor Tenant Model to Solve UK Fibre Broadband Woes

A new report from Oxera and CityFibre, which builds fibre optic (FTTH) networks for big towns and cities around the United Kingdom, has suggested that an “anchor tenant” (shared fibre) approach to the roll-out of new superfast broadband ISP platforms could offer an “alternative, yet complementary” approach to BT’s network.

The director of business ISP Andrews and Arnold (AAISP), Adrian Kennard, has criticised the O2 Wholesale (BE Broadband) back-haul capacity offered through Fluidata because of “congestion issues” that have been “going on for a while“; some of which is spill-over from heavy use on O2/BE’s “unlimited” consumer services.

BT Openreach Tells UK Engineers to Remain Neutral if Asked About An ISP

BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s telecoms network across the United Kingdom, has issued a new Do’s and Don’ts List that advises its engineers to “remain neutral” when asked about ISPs and not to recommend BT’s own retail broadband products (BTInfinity etc.). It also tells them to give people a chance to reach the door when they visit.

BT Wholesale’s latest price list update reveals that the operators forthcoming and “ultra-fast” 330Mbps (30Mbps uploads) capable FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD) broadband ISP service, which will be available to FTTC capable UK lines from spring 2013, could attract Excess Construction Charges (ECC) of over £3,000.

As anticipated the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), which represents much of the UK music industry, will today ask the High Court to force six of the country’s biggest broadband ISPs into blocking a further three websites that are accused of facilitating internet piracy (copyright infringement).

EE UK Home Broadband ISP Subscribers See Sharp Fall to 693000

Telecoms operator EE has released its latest financial results to Q4-2012 and revealed that their fixed line Home Broadband subscriber base has suddenly declined to a total of 693,000 (down by -29,000 during Q4). The figure represents a shock fall and relates directly to the ending of Orange UK’s free broadband deal last year.

Tfl Expand FREE Wireless Internet to 50 London Overground Train Stations

Transport for London (Tfl) has announced that passengers at 50 London Overground stations can now access The Cloud’s (BSkyB) free wireless internet (wifi) service and the final seven stations are due to be enabled by the end of June 2013.

EU Release Updated Broadband Access Coverage Report to July 2012

The European Commission (EC) has today published new data on the number of broadband lines and ISP speed in Member States, including the UK, gathered to July 2012. Overall 95.7% of EU homes are already passed by at least one fixed broadband ISP but 9.1 million homes still do not have coverage (over 90% of which are in rural areas).

The boss of telecoms analyst firm Point Topic, Oliver Johnson, has warned that blowing true fibre optic lines (FTTH / P) along the streets and across the fields of Europe and the United Kingdom is ultimately “super-expensive” and thus no longer the “first choice” when it comes to building new superfast broadband networks.

The Institute of Directors, an organisation for EU business leaders, polled 1,147 of its members to reveal that faster broadband could improve productivity at 83% of companies, encourage 31% to invest more in their business and cause 15% of firms to hire more staff. But it also criticised BTOpenreach in the UK for low service satisfaction levels.

Virgin Media Creates 400 New UK Engineer and Support Jobs

Cable operator Virgin Media has moved to “support the government’s ambitions for the country” by announcing the creation of 400 new jobs across the United Kingdom. Overall they will add 90 new engineers, 80 customer care assistants and 230 customer service and technical support staff.

Humax has announced the retail release of its new DTR-T1010 set-top-box for the YouView (IPTV) service, which offers broadband based catch-up TV and video-on-demand services via several UK ISPs (BT, TalkTalk, KC and JT); it can also be purchased separately from £299.99. But don’t expect anything too new.
