The government’s culture secretary, Maria Miller MP, and BT have met local action groups (some of which were smaller ISPs) in an effort to resolve the impasse over which parts of the UK will not gain access to superfast broadband (25Mbps+). It’s currently hard for alternative operators to fill the gaps without first knowing where the gaps are.

BT WiFi has today announced that its free wifi wireless internet hotspots will be rolled out to 140 Young’s and Geronimo pubs and bars in London and the South East over the next five months.

The European Commission’s recent promise to “guarantee” Net Neutrality by ensuring that broadband ISPs and mobile operators give citizens access to the full and open internet, “without any blocking or throttling of competing services” (here), has been called into question after a draft of the new regulation was leaked.

The latest ISPreview.co.uk poll of 536 website visitors has revealed that almost two thirds of respondents find the current process of switching between home broadband ISPs to be confusing and 93% support Ofcom’s (telecoms regulator) efforts to simplify the system. But most people would be put off if this came at a cost.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has today unveiled the full winners list from last night’s 15th annual 2013 Internet Industry Awards, which saw the award for ‘Best Superfast Broadband‘ go to London ISP Hyperoptic and the gong for ‘Best Consumer Fixed Broadband‘ being won by Sky Broadband.

The incumbent ISP for Hull and East Yorkshire in England, KC, has revealed that the roll-out of its new superfast fibre optic (FTTH and FTTC) based Lightstream broadband service has expanded to reach more than 20,000 homes and businesses in the region.

The government’s Communications Minister, Ed Vaizey, has confirmed that two thirds of the projects that were initially designed to help deliver superfast broadband (25Mbps+) services to 90% of the United Kingdom by 2015 are now underway and the remaining 15 contracts should be “agreed shortly“.

RootMetrics has published a new study of mobile broadband performance in Edinburgh and Glasgow (Scotland, UK), which as usual found that EE and Three UK delivered the fastest 4G and 3G data connections respectively to local mobile users.

The Dorset County Council (DCC) in central southern England has today signed a new state-aid supported £31.75 million deal with BT to expand its fibre optic based (FTTC/P) broadband ISP services to cover 97% of the region within the next three and a half years (i.e. late 2017).
