ISPA Name the WINNERS of their 2014 UK ISP Internet Industry Awards

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has tonight announced the winners of its 16th annual 2014 Internet Industry Awards, which saw Hyperoptic’s urban FTTH service pick-up the prize for ‘Best Superfast Broadband’ and PlusNet secure a win as the ‘Best Consumer Fixed Broadband’ provider. But there were many more categories and awards.

Three UK Named Fastest Mobile Broadband Operator in Road Trip Test

Mobile operator Three UK has come top in a new Road Trip 2014 study of Mobile Broadband performance, which among other things found that the provider delivered both the fastest average 3G (4.48Mbps DOWN and 1.4Mbps UP) and 4G (6.19Mbps DOWN and 1.54Mbps UP) based mobile Internet speeds. Meanwhile EE was a close second.

Europe Offers Support to Local Community Broadband Projects

The European Commission (EC) has today moved to complement their Digital Agenda project, which aims to make broadband speeds of 30Mbps+ available to all EU homes come 2020, by launching a new “Connected Communities” initiative that offers additional funding and support to local community broadband partnerships and operators.

BT’s “ultrafast” fibre optic based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which can currently deliver Internet download speeds of up to 330Mbps (30Mbps uploads), has revealed that the operators national network is now covering “nearly” 150,000 homes and businesses (premises passed) across the United Kingdom.

The government will today announce emergency legislation that many fear could be an amended version of its controversial RIPA or Communications Data Bill (CDB) which, before it was shelved for a second time, aimed to extend the United Kingdom’s existing internet snooping powers by requiring ISPs to log a much bigger slice of everybody’s online activity; regardless of whether or not you’ve ever committed a crime.

BT Claims Broadband Refusenik Missing Out on £1k in Benefits

BT claims that more than 99% of homes in the United Kingdom are within reach of a basic broadband connection and yet around 6.4 million people still aren’t online (ONS figures). This is important because their latest “independent study” claims that the social benefits of going online for the first time could be worth as much as £1,000+ per year.

Telecom giant Alcatel-Lucent appears, perhaps to the dismay of fibre optic campaigners, to have given the traditional copper telephone line a new lease of life after its Bell Labs research division claimed to set a new world record by delivering “ultra-broadband” speeds of 10,000Mbps (Megabits per second) over the aging infrastructure using a prototype technology called XG-FAST (G.fast2?).

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a mailing, website and press advert for TalkTalk after a member of the public and BT complained that the ISP was misleading the public by claiming to offer “Britain’s lowest priced” totally unlimited broadband service in all three promotions.

ASA Ban BT Advert for Claiming Sky Would Switch-Off O2 Broadband Users

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a BT direct mailing advert, which Sky Broadband claimed had mislead recipients of the promotion because it implied that Sky would “switch off” O2’s old fixed line home broadband service in April 2014 (i.e. suggesting that customers might be left stranded).

Poor Broadband and IT Skills Fuel Criticism of UK Digital by Default Policy

The Government’s new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and so-called “digital by default” strategy, which among other things seeks to save money by making some services online-only, faced criticism in the House of Commons on Monday after MPs blasted it for being introduced before some rural farmers could even get access to a good broadband connection.

UK Post Office Confirms Launch of New Mobile Network

Business ISP Coms, which earlier this year created some customer frustrations with its mixed attempt to merge ADSL24’s (So Purple Group) old broadband subscriber base (here) into their own operations, has this week informed many of the same users that they now plan to terminate their old email and web hosting services.

Isle of Wight Begins Much Delayed Superfast Broadband Rollout

The Isle of Wight, after last year becoming one of the very last Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programmes to be approved due to some initial competition concerns with BT’s bid (here and here), has finally started its local roll-out of superfast broadband (FTTC) connectivity on the island in central southern England and good progress is being made.

Survey Finds Frustration with Broadband ISP Terms and Conditions

A new survey of 574 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that 84.8% of respondents think that the Terms and Conditions (T&Cs) thrown at us by broadband providers are both far too long and confusing, which might explain why a third (32.9%) of people choose to skip them entirely.
