Mobile operator EE (Everything Everywhere) has quietly announced that next year’s delayed commercial launch of their new 300Mbps capable 4G (LTE-Advanced) based Mobile Broadband service will also be accompanied by another trial to push the networks top performance up to a staggering 400Mbps (Megabits per second).

The Isle of Man, which is a British Crown dependency located in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland, has traditionally been dominated for broadband and phone services by Manx Telecom and Sure. But smaller rival Wi-Manx is now aiming to compete at a bigger level by applying to become a full service telecoms communications provider.

WightFibre, which operates a cable broadband, TV and phone network on the Isle of Wight just off the central south coast of England (Hampshire), has announced that customers of their top 120Mbps (Megabits per second) package will be given yet another free speed boost to 152Mbps from October 2014.

Impossible promise or inevitable reality. The British Labour party has effectively kicked off their 2015 General Election campaign today by seeming to support new proposals from the Labour Digital group, which demands a “national focus on connectivity” that will deliver 1000Mbps (1Gbps) broadband to all homes and offices, with 10Gps connections for business hubs like Tech City.

Criminals have disrupted the broadband and phone services for at least 5,000 people and businesses in the North East England town of Billingham (Durham), which is home to a total population of 36,000+, after they stole large sections of vital copper telecoms cable from BT’s local network.

A local campaign has succeeding in extending the reach of BT’s “superfast broadband” (25Mbps+ FTTC/P) network in South Gloucestershire, which will now be expanded into a number of additional locations on its way to reaching 94% of the county by the end of March 2015.

The Superfast Leicestershire project in central England, which aims to make BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network available to 96% of local homes and businesses by the end of March 2016 (i.e. an extra 62,000 premises), has uploaded a more detailed and interactive coverage map of the planned deployment.

As expected the Government has today moved to boost the low uptake of their Connection Vouchers scheme, which offers grants worth between £200 and £3,000 to help small and medium sized businesses install a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service in any of 22 cities across the United Kingdom, by making further changes.

Consumer broadband ISP TalkTalk set yet another record last week when the release of Apple’s latest iOS8 software update for iPhones and iPads helped to push the Internet data traffic on their network in the United Kingdom to a new peak of 1.25Tbps (Terabits per second), which equates to 1,250Gbps (Gigabits | note: 1000Mbps = 1Gbps).

Credible sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that the coalition Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme will later this autumn announce a 3rd phase of public funding to help bring high-speed Internet access to the final 5-8% of the United Kingdom’s population.

Back in the spring Sky’s broadband-based NOW TV video streaming service announced that plans for a sudden 40% price hike of their popular Entertainment Pass, which gives customers access to 10 major live premium TV channels (e.g. Sky One and Sky Atlantic), would be put on hold (here). Now the bad news.. that price hike is back.

A new study from the Analysis Group, which was conducted on behalf of the American Fibre-to-the-Home Council, has claimed that communities with widely available 1Gbps (1000Mbps) broadband access through FTTH style fibre optic connectivity have per capita GDP that is 1.1% higher than communities with little to no availability of gigabit services.

As expected BT has now officially signed a new Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) contract that will aim to roll-out FTTC/P based “fibre broadband” services to 98% of South Yorkshire (i.e. Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield) by the end of 2017.

Efforts to deploy 20 new submarine fibre optic cables around the western side of Scotland’s Highlands and Islands region (here) have suffered a setback after the French cable-laying ship Rene Descartes (Orange Marine) lost an 8 tonne submersible plough worth £3.6m.
