Customers of EE’s mobile service in the United Kingdom, specifically those who may be attempting to surf the Internet using their 3G or 4G based data connections (Mobile Broadband), are today being hit by sporadic problems that can result in legitimate websites being wrongfully blocked.

Consumer magazine Which? has today published the results of their latest biannual reader survey of broadband ISP satisfaction, which ended up handing their top ‘Recommended Provider’ status to Utility Warehouse, Zen Internet and John Lewis. By comparison most of the markets largest providers were pushed to the bottom.

Travellers looking to fly with Virgin Atlantic may be pleased to learn that Richard Branson’s airline has become the first European carrier to deploy Gogo’s new in-flight connectivity technology (2Ku), which uses a mix of ground and space (satellite) based stations to deliver on-board Internet access speeds of up to 70Mbps over a local WiFi network.

It’s been seven months since Hyperoptic announced that their “hyper-sonic” 1000Mbps (Megabits per second) capable home and business Fibre-To-The-Building (FTTB) network would be expanding into the city of Cardiff in Wales (here) and now residents of the Hayes Apartments will be the first to officially benefit as the service finally goes live.

Ofcom’s carefully crafted control of the United Kingdom’s market for broadband and phone services might face a challenge next month. A leaked proposal suggests that the EU’s new rules, which are designed to foster a Single Telecoms Market, could seek to remove some of the charge controls on BT’s services.

EE (4GEE) has today introduced a refreshed range of 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) based SIM-Only plans. But keep an eye on the slightly bigger Mobile Broadband data allowances because they’ll only last until 31st January 2015 before being reduced.

BTOpenreach has proposed a new product option (‘Single-Order GEA-FTTC’) that could allow customers to take a Fibre-to-the-Cabinet based superfast broadband service, albeit without also needing to have a traditional phone solution for voice calls (aka – Naked FTTC).

Time and again we’ve been told that the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme with BT is running way behind schedule (example) and yet actual progress on the ground consistently appears to suggest otherwise. The latest example comes from the Better Broadband for Suffolk project in England, which has just reached the 50,000 premises passed mark and now claims to be more than 6 weeks ahead of schedule.

Strong Mobile Broadband penetration, good average download speeds and fixed broadband subscriber growth are all considered “strengths” that have helped to push the United Kingdom into 3rd place on Huawei’s new Global Connectivity Index, ranking us just behind the USA (2nd) and Germany (1st). But our telecoms investment as a % of GDP could apparently be better.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a TV, website and several press adverts for Virgin Media’s cable broadband service after rival ISPs, BT and Sky Broadband (BSkyB), complained that the promotions “misled” consumers by claiming the service offered Internet download speeds that were “5x faster than Sky and BT’s regular broadband“.

Residents of Llanidloes in Powys (Wales), which is a small town that’s home to around 3,000 people, can now benefit after local ISP PCQ Solutions made a free public WiFi hotspot service available in the area and it could soon arrive in similarly sized towns across the United Kingdom.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson (Conservative), will today meet some of the United Kingdom’s largest ISPs and mobile operators (including Virgin Media, BT and O2 UK) at a ‘Connectivity Summit’ where it’s hoped that a strategy can be devised to help improve the city’s superfast broadband connectivity.

Virgin Media has today confirmed our report from last month and said they’re teaming-up with the John Henry Group to trial a new fibre optic based narrow-trenching deployment technology in the large village of Papworth Everard, which resides near the city of Cambridge (England). Locals can expect to receive download speeds of up to 1000Mbps.

The Black Country (Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton) in England’s West Midlands has, after sitting out the first round of funding from the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme, finally agreed a £7.5m project to make superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services available to 95% of local premises by 2017.

South Yorkshire ISP Origin Broadband has attempted to move on from last month’s customer support and connectivity troubles (here), which related to the closure of Digital Region’s (DRL) local network, by officially launching their new services and offering free unlimited broadband to “everyone within reach of our network who takes line rental“.

In an unexpected move the budget ISP Direct Save Telecom has today announced the launch of a new “low-cost unlimited high-speed” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband service for new builds in the United Kingdom, with prices starting from just £4.95 per month. But details appear to be in short supply.

People travelling on the South West Trains service in England, specifically those who use the main line route from London Waterloo to Weymouth and Portsmouth, will from today be able to make use of a new on-board FREE wireless Internet (WiFi Hotspot) service, just so long as it’s one of the operators Class 444 Desiro electric trains.
