The Middlesbrough Council in North East England has this week approved additional funding of £493k, which will be used to help make BT’s superfast broadband (FTTC/P) services available to 95% of people by 2017 (including an additional 500 local businesses). But the funding represents less than half what was actually made available.

The Digital Dales (Fibre GarDen) project, which is a community owned co-operative that aims to construct a new superfast broadband (30-100Mbps capable) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in rural parts of Garsdale and Dentdale (Cumbria, England), has confirmed that the construction phase will begin on Monday 5th October 2014.

Gigaclear, which specialises in rolling out true 1000Mbps capable fibre optic (FTTP/H) broadband services to rural communities across the United Kingdom, looks set to float its way onto the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange (LSE) in order to initially raise an additional £20m to help fund an even more aggressive expansion strategy.

The heated debate over Scottish independence, which is due to be decided in a referendum this week (Thursday 18th Sept), took another twist over the weekend as national telecoms and broadband operators including BT, TalkTalk, O2 (Telefonica UK), Vodafone, EE and Three UK united in a rare show of unity to highlight some of their considerations.

The Independent Next Generation Networks Limited (INGNL) has hinted at plans to expand the reach of their carrier-neutral Next Generation Wholesale Access Network (NGANs) in order to deliver broadband speeds of 300Mbps (Megabits per second) to new-build town and urban developments that have been approved by the UK Government and local planning authorities.

Ofcom has proposed to grant Code Powers to BSkyB Ltd. (Sky Broadband) in order to both make it easier for them to maintain and develop their core fibre optic network (e.g. quicker approval for street works) and to support trials of new solutions, such as a Passive Infrastructure Access (PIA) and Sub-Loop Unbundling (SLU) related broadband services.

After being delayed from last week Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today moved to entice both new and existing customers to adopt their ‘up to’ 38Mbps capable FTTC based superfast broadband (Sky Fibre Unlimited) service by offering it FREE for the first 6 months of service (£20 per month thereafter).

At times Vodafone’s on-going attempts to grab a slice of the UK and or EU fixed broadband, TV and phone market can seem akin to throwing a bunch of big names around and seeing what sticks. So it’s little surprise to find that they seem to have moved from sniffing around BSkyB (Sky Broadband) to showing interest in Virgin Media’s parent, Liberty Global. Meanwhile BT continues to threaten.

Several Rothesay locals, which is a small but principal town of around 5,000 people on the Isle of Bute (West Scotland), have complained after BT advised that it would not be possible to connect their new premises to broadband until November 2014 due to capacity problems at the nearby telephone exchange (the normal wait is usually around 2 weeks).

Customers of mobile operator GiffGaff look set to be disappointed when it removes the “Unlimited Internet” component from two of their top interchangeable monthly SIM-only (goodybags) plans. The allowance will, effective from 24th September 2014, instead be replaced by a capped quota of just a few GigaBytes and a new Traffic Management change will drop some speeds to just 300Kbps (0.3Mbps).

The latest information on superfast broadband availability has revealed that, at the end of June 2014, some 87.9% of premises in the United Kingdom were in areas that are listed as offering services via a Next Generation Access (NGA) network and some 251,522 (premises passed) were potentially within reach of a true ultrafast (100Mbps+) fibre optic (FTTH/P/B) connection.

The Northumberland County Council in North East England are preparing to upload a much more detailed map of their local superfast broadband roll-out through the state aid supported iNorthumberland project. But the new map also provides fresh evidence that BT is ramping up deployments of their “ultrafast” 330Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.

One thing the UK Internet access market has in abundance right now is budget broadband ISPs and thus you’d probably have to be a little mad to launch another one into such an aggressively competitive sector. Never the less that’s exactly what the famously budget high street retailer 99p Stores has just done.

In an interesting move the Bristol City Council (South West England) has decided to try and drum up more interest in the local Broadband Connection Vouchers scheme by extending its availability to businesses outside of the city’s administrative boundary. More UK cities may soon follow suit.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has published the first responses to its latest Business Connectivity Market Review 2016 (BCMR2016) consultation and perhaps unsurprisingly it finds rivals including Vodafone, BSkyB (Sky Broadband), TalkTalk and Virgin Media all demanding greater access to BT’s cable ducts, dark fibre and leased lines.
