The on-going attempts to turn BT into a pinata continue this week as both Vodafone and Sky (Sky Broadband) have taken another opportunity to prod the telecoms giant ahead of Ofcom’s Strategic Review decision, with one demanding a national Gigabit broadband network and the other attacking the operator’s excess profits.

A new study by Return Path has decried the otherwise welcome fact that commercial marketers are finding it harder and harder to push their annoying emails into your inbox. For example, 82% of commercial emails reached their intended UK recipients this year, which is down from 87% in 2014.

Vodafone has announced that their Rural Open Sure Signal (ROSS100) technology, which makes use of fixed line broadband connections in order to boost local outdoor 3G mobile signals (femtocell), has been expanded to reach its first community in Scotland – Tarbert on the Isle of Harris.

The Government’s Connection Voucher scheme has been suspended to new applications as funding dries up. The vouchers gifted grants worth up to £3,000 to help smaller businesses in 50 UK cities get a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service installed.

The generically named UK Broadband Ltd., a sibling of Hong Kong based telecoms firm PCCW (HKT) and the company behind London fixed wireless ISP Relish, has reportedly been given one year to turn itself around after losses for 2014 quadrupled to £37.5m on a turnover of just £1.5m vs £2m in 2013.

Skyenet, a rural community project that delivers fixed wireless broadband services to Aird, Achnacloich, Tokavaig, Ord and Drumfearn on the remote Isle of Skye in Scotland, has announced that their network will soon be expanded to include Heaste in the south of Sky and other Sleat villages.
