Virgin Media (Liberty Global), which caters to the cable broadband and TV markets in both the United Kingdom and Ireland, has this afternoon confirmed that they’ve splashed out £8.51m million (€10m) with ITV plc to acquire UTV Ireland (Ireland’s newest free-to-air commercial broadcaster).

The UK telecoms regulator has today fired the starting gun for their strategic review fixed wireless spectrum, which covers everything from high capacity wireless data capacity links (e.g. those that supply capacity to mobile operators) to wireless leased lines for end users.

Coax cable (DOCSIS) and fibre optic provider Virgin Media has today announced the next batch of 30 communities and villages from across England and Wales that will benefit from an upgrade to their FTTP ultrafast broadband (up to 300Mbps) and TV network, as voted for by residents of each area.

New and existing customers of EE’s pay monthly and SIM-only mobile plans can now benefit from 6 months of free access to the BTSport TV app (£5 a month thereafter), which is no doubt a benefit that has been extracted from the recent £12.5bn merger between the two. Just watch your data usage.

The £1.9m UKB Networks contract to roll-out a new superfast (24Mbps+) wireless broadband network in North Swindon faces a big test tomorrow when a revised application for 4 new masts goes before the planning committee, but recent developments from BT and Virgin Media may complicate the vote.
