UK Internet provider TalkTalk Business has today confirmed that they will be one of the first ISPs to adopt Openreach’s (BT) proposed ‘Dark Fibre Access‘ product, which follows a key ruling by the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that will affect how the service is priced.

The MP for Warrington North (Cheshire, England), Helen Jones, has claimed that many residents in the area should be paid a total of £246,000 in compensation by ISPs because of the slow broadband speeds that local homes are alleged to endure. She wants Ofcom to take action.

Consumer magazine Which? has published the results from their first 2017 reader survey of broadband ISP satisfaction, which saw Zen Internet retain the top “Recommended Provider” award for their broadband service. At the other end TalkTalk attracted the lowest level of customer satisfaction.

Earlier this year we reported that the City of London Corporation aimed to deploy a free WiFi network with “gigabit speeds” across much of the city’s “Square Mile” heart (here). Today we can confirm that O2 and Cornerstone Telecommunications Infrastructure (CTIL) will build and run it.

Cable operator Virgin Media has announced that some 42,000 additional homes and businesses across Devon (England) will soon gain access to their ultrafast 300Mbps cable broadband and TV service, which forms part of the £3bn Project Lightning network expansion.

RootMetrics has today published the results from their latest study, which reveals the 4G (LTE) network coverage of the United Kingdom’s four primary mobile operators, across 14 of the biggest cities. Unsurprisingly EE does the best in 13 of the 14 metro areas tested.

A new study of 2,000 UK people by residential housing developer Redrow has claimed that the most important factor which goes toward creating a community is access to a local doctor’s surgery (99.5%), which was followed by “high-speed broadband” (98.1%).

Fixed Wireless Access ISP Village Networks has confirmed that they’re now expanding the coverage of their superfast broadband network to reach the rural villages of Russell’s Water, Maidensgrove, Swyncombe, Stonor, Greenfield, Turville Heath, Park Corner, Britwell Hill and Howe Hill.

At present it’s unlawful (unless approved by a Mobile Network Operator) for consumers to use repeaters that boost and retransmit UK mobile signals, which can help indoor coverage but may also cause interference or other adverse effects for nearby customers. Ofcom now proposes to change this.

The Scottish Road Works Commissioner has fined fibre optic network builder Cityfibre £35,000 due to a “number of serious failures to comply with road works legislation in Scotland,” such as the one that occurred in Edinburgh (here) after a contractor sat exposed in a manhole on a busy street.

Consumer magazine Which? has conducted a new Populus survey of 2,084 UK households, which claims that 16 million people (59% of respondents) have suffered a problem with their broadband connection during the past year and 12.5 million households were left frustrated as a result.
