£6.85bn for UK Broadband and 5G Infrastructure Upgrades by 2021

The Government has today published their ‘National Infrastructure and Construction Pipeline’ report, which reveals the scale of public and private investment that is underway or expected to be put toward 5G mobile and broadband ISP connectivity (especially full fibre FTTP) between 2018/19 and 2020/21 (financial year).

Openreach List 81 New UK Areas for G.fast Ultrafast Broadband UPDATE

A further 81 new locations have today (November 2018 update) been confirmed as the next to benefit from Openreach’s (BT) roll-out of 330Mbps capable hybrid fibre G.fast “ultrafast broadband” ISP technology, which aims to cover 5.7 million UK homes and businesses by the end of 2020 (March 2021 financial year).

Report – UK WiFi Download Speeds are Faster than Mobile Networks

A new report from OpenSignal, which uses crowd-sourced data to test 4G or 3G based Mobile Broadband network performance, has revealed that in 33 countries Smartphone users now experience faster average download speeds on a mobile network (4G / 3G) than via WiFi. But not in the United Kingdom, we’re the reverse.

O2 UK Lays Groundwork for 5G with London Trial of Massive MIMO

Mobile operator O2 UK has today announced that they’ve begun a new pilot with Nokia in parts of London (i.e. Kings Cross and Marble Arch), which will test Massive MIMO (multiple input, multiple output) technology as a way of helping to improve Mobile Broadband speeds in preparation for future 5G services.

ISP NOW TV Offer Broadband Discounts and Half Price Sky Sports

ITS Technology Offers 200Mbps Business Full Fibre for £99 a Month

The ITS Technology Group, which has built several fibre optic broadband ISP networks around the UK, has launched a special Black Friday discount for small businesses within their network coverage that offers 200Mbps “full fibre” for just £99 +vat per month or 1Gbps for £245 (symmetrical speeds).

Energy provider and UK ISP First Utility (Shell) has today launched a series of new Black Friday discounts across their broadband (ADSL / FTTC) and phone packages, which slashes their monthly prices for the first 18 months of service and also beyond. 5G Mobile Trial in Japan Delivers Broadband Speeds of 27Gbps

A joint outdoor field trial by Mitsubishi and NTT DOCOMO in Japan appears to have achieved a “world’s first” by pushing the future 5G mobile network technology to deliver maximum throughput speeds of 27Gbps and 25Gbps (communication distances of 10m and 100m respectively) via one mobile terminal in the 28GHz band.

JT Picks ZTE to Deploy 5G Mobile on the British Channel Islands

The stated-owned telecoms operator JT (Jersey Telecom) has decided to shun recent security concerns by partnering with Chinese state-owned enterprise ZTE, which will help them to build a new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network on the Channel Islands (Jersey and Guernsey in the English Channel).

A new study from the Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE), which did a systematic analysis of all of the 157 broadband measures that have been notified to the European Commission by Member States (inc. UK) between 2003 and August 2018, has warned that the current level of public funding is “insufficient“.

Mobile operator Three UK and Huawei have teamed-up in London to demonstrate a multi-site 5G network, which was able to deliver peak wireless broadband speeds of up to 3-4Gbps (Gigabits per second) via the 28GHz radio spectrum band and 1-2Gbps when using the 3.4GHz band.

TalkTalk Unveil UK FTTH Rollout Plan as Broadband Users Top 4.24M UPDATE

The latest trading update from TalkTalk has revealed that the ISP increased their on-net broadband customers to total 4,243,000, which is up by +24K during quarter to the end of Sept 2018 (vs +80k in the previous quarter). On top of that they’ve unveiled the “FibreNation” roll-out plan for their “full fibre” (FTTH) network.

Sky Broadband UK Resuscitates 36Mbps Sky Fibre Unlimited Plan

UK ISP Sky Broadband has reintroduced their 36Mbps (average speed) “Sky Fibre Unlimited” FTTC broadband and phone package, which was removed from public display at the start of October (here) and that left only their 11Mbps and 63Mbps packages. They’ve also introduced some new discounts.
