The East Riding of Yorkshire (England) focused ISP Pure Broadband, which primarily operates a mix of fibre optic (FTTP) and fixed wireless (5GHz) based broadband networks for businesses and homes in the Hull area, has said they have “big plans” to expand after gobbling rival provider Relax Broadband.

New customers of cable operator Virgin Media’s mobile division (Virgin Mobile) can until 31st January 2019 buy a specially discounted 4G SIM-Only plan, which features unlimited calls, unlimited texts and 120GB of data (mobile broadband) for just £20 per month on a 12 month contract term.

Urban focused fibre optic broadband ISP Hyperoptic has today continued to build its new executive team by appointing Moray Falconer, an experienced civil engineer, to be its new Managing Director (MD) of Infrastructure. Falconer will report directly to CEO Dana Tobak.

Openreach (BT) is to trial a new UK Fibre Infrastructure Pre-Build product for Communication Providers (ISPs etc.), which a briefing says will “allow them to start the fibre infrastructure build in parallel to their own site or network readiness.”

Swedish fibre optic builder VXFIBER, which is working to deploy a new 1Gbps open access FTTP broadband ISP network in Stoke-on-Trent (here), has appointed Steven Drake as its Senior Project Manager for the Midlands and North of England to help with their UK expansion plans.

Ofcom has today published a new report, which examines how affordability, take-up and engagement with UK telecoms, TV and postal services compares via different groups. Overall 13% of broadband and phone consumers switched ISP (down from 17% a year ago) and financially vulnerable people are less likely to have “superfast” speeds.

Smaller projects in the Leeds City Region will now also be able to access Connection Vouchers worth between £500 and up to £1000, which can be used to help cover the costs involved with securing a new 30Mbps+ capable broadband ISP connection (e.g. firewalls, routers, installation, cabling, project management fees etc.).

The CEO of UK cable broadband ISP and TV operator Virgin Media, Tom Mockridge, has called on the country’s political parties to put their differences aside and deliver clarity when the Prime Minister’s Brexit deal with the EU is voted on tomorrow. “Clarity is vital … for the sake of stability and greater certainty,” said Tom.

No, it’s not an early April Fools. Instead April is officially the month when the government’s new age verification system – targeted at commercial websites and “apps” that contain pornographic content – comes into force. Broadband ISPs will also be required to block sites that fail to comply with the new rules.

A series of new ITU standards promise to help encourage the ‘Do-It-Yourself‘ generation to build their own Terabit capable remote broadband networks. The standards propose a cheap, tough and lightweight optical fibre cable that can be laid on the grounds surface, underwater, aerially or shallow buried with hand tools.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has today described Ofcom’s plan to introduce a £3.65 price cap in order to control “rip off” calls to premium 118 (Directory Enquires) numbers as “inadequate“. In response they’ve launched a new ‘Call Whisper’ feature that will warn customers about the potentially high costs.

At the end of last year BT launched a new “coverage guarantee” for their premium “Plus” packages (here), which pledged to deliver strong WiFi signals across your whole home via a new “Complete Wi-Fi” solution. The UK ISP has now expanded this to new non-Plus customers and thrown in 1 year of Amazon Prime access.

Which? has published yet another “Loyalty Penalty” focused survey of 3,131 members, which found that 40% of customers who signed up to a dual or triple-play bundle (e.g. broadband, phone and mobile or TV) have stayed with the same UK ISP for 10+ years and could thus be paying significantly more than new subscribers.

Customers of BT’s broadband, mobile and phone services may be interested to learn that the ISP is making a major change to how it handles price rises. From today any new or re-contracting customers to those services will see new terms (T&Cs), which state that future prices will increase by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) each year.

Cityfibre’s £10m investment to build a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the city of Stirling (Scotland), which is being conducted alongside UK ISP Vodafone and began last November (here), has been criticised for a “lack of communication and lack of respect.” Traffic disruption is a big issue.

Business focused UK ISP MLL Telecom has today announced that they’ve been appointed by Fife Council in Scotland to transition and transform the local authority’s existing Wide Area Network (WAN) infrastructure, not least by adding additional bandwidth to council sites via a new 10Gbps capacity core network.
