Cityfibre UK Ramps Up Work on Bournemouth’s 1Gbps FTTH Network

Cityfibre’s £35m investment to upgrade and extend their Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network in the south coast UK city of Bournemouth (Dorset), which is being supported by ISP partner Vodafone UK, appears to be moving up a gear this month with work starting in areas north of Wallisdown Road.

ISP Giganet Launch 1Gbps Burstable Full Fibre Ethernet for £149

Hampshire-based UK business ISP Giganet has today launched their own take on Cityfibre’s new Flex Ethernet product, which for £149 +vat per month will give you a guaranteed rate of 200Mbps (symmetric) that can burst to 1Gbps “on-demand” and with “zero additional charges” (provided there’s enough spare capacity).

Quickline’s Trial 5G Wireless Network in Lincolnshire Set to Go Live

Wireless UK ISP Quickline has announced that their part of the £2.1m Government funded 5G Rural Integrated Testbed (5GRIT) pilot is due to start testing its new network later this month, which will initially aim to bring superfast broadband to holidaymakers across caravan parks in Ingoldmells (Lincolnshire), including Butlins.

Virgin Media UK Extending to Thousands of Extra Hampshire Homes

Cable TV and ultrafast broadband ISP Virgin Media looks set to extend their network coverage to several thousand more homes in Hampshire (England) by the end of 2019. A big chunk of the new work appears to be taking place in the large village of Bishopstoke, which sits just outside of Eastleigh.

Ofcom Toughens UK Phone Number Porting to Prevent Abuse

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today introduced new protections, which are designed to make it harder for dodgy fixed broadband ISPs and phone providers to block or hinder consumers from being able to port their telephone numbers to a different provider.

UK Slowest as OpenSignal Tests Early 5G Mobile Broadband Speeds

Crowd-sourced analyst firm OpenSignal has today published the first results from their initial real-world benchmarks of 5G based mobile broadband networks across 8 countries (i.e. those that have launched the service). The highest maximum speeds were seen by 5G users in the USA (1815Mbps), while the UK scored the lowest (569Mbps).

The Community Fibre Partnerships scheme from Openreach (BT), which offers to help co-fund the cost of upgrading digitally isolated communities to receive their FTTC, G.fast or FTTP based superfast broadband ISP network, has now signed-up its 930th community and expects to deliver for 100,000 UK premises.

UK Government Incorrectly Claims 97% Superfast Broadband Cover UPDATE

The Government’s Minister for Digital and the Creative Industries, Margot James MP, has wrongfully claimed that its Building Digital UK programme has now helped to push fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network coverage to 97% of UK premises (the expectation is that this could reach around 98% by the end of 2020).

Coverage continues to grow, albeit slowly as contracts near their end.

Entanet has announced that businesses within reach of their parent company’s (Cityfibre) Dark Fibre network, which is present in parts of over 50 cities across the United Kingdom, can now order their Ethernet Flex service for just £199 +vat per month. This offers a guaranteed rate of 200Mbps (symmetric) but can burst to 1Gbps.
