The Scottish Government‘s £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) contract with BT (here and here), which originally aspired to make “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks available to “every single premises in Scotland” by the end of 2021 and is already running a year behind schedule, may allegedly not complete until late 2024.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has confirmed that they’ve started to roll-out their new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across the northern city of Newcastle (Tyne and Wear), which is expected to cost £50m and is being supported by their UK ISP partner Vodafone.

Well this is an odd but interesting one. A team of VTT scientists from Finland have successfully transmitted light over a new type of wood-based optic fibre cable, which has a core that is made from cellulose and this has the added advantage of being biodegradable.

A spate of internet connectivity problems appears to have been striking customers of UK ISP Zen Internet since earlier this morning, which so far as we can tell currently only affects those with DSL (ADSL and FTTC / VDSL2) based broadband lines.

Video streaming and IPTV company netgem.tv has announced that over the past 6 months they’ve been able to sign partnership agreements with 12 “Ultrafast Fibre” ISPs in the UK, which all told could enable their platform to reach over a quarter of a million UK homes.

Hampshire-based broadband ISP Onestream, which was established in 2016 and has launched a range of affordable ADSL2+ and FTTC based bundles, has today been fined £35,000 by Ofcom after the regulator found that they “took over the telephone services of more than a 100 people without their permission” (slamming).

A test conducted by the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) on the new Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) standard at the Mettis Aerospace factory in the UK has managed to deliver a real speed of 700Mbps (unclear if this is just download) with latency below 6ms (milliseconds), although that’s a far cry from the multi-Gigabit speeds promised.

Rural full fibre UK ISP TrueSpeed, which is currently rolling out a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across parts of South West England (Somerset), has today announced that they intend to extend their network to cover 6,000 homes and 1,000 businesses in the small cathedral city of Wells.

Rochdale-based broadband ISP Zen Internet has today announced the appointment of Georgina Lord to be the new Managing Director of their consumer facing Retail division, which forms part of the UK provider’s on-going efforts to take on the “big four” (BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk and Virgin Media).

Portsmouth-based UK ISP toob, which was setup by a group Vodafone’s former directors and is being supported by an investment of £75m (here), has announced that the first customers have now gone live on their new symmetric 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Southampton (Hampshire).

Purple, which supplies a number of WiFi networks and related management / analytical services, has announced the appointment of BT’s former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) – Gavin Patterson – as a new non-executive Director. Patterson also separately holds the role of Chairman (EMEA region) at Silicon Valley tech firm Salesforce.

A new report has used data from 122,845 consumer speedtests to identify both the top 10 fastest and slowest UK streets for broadband download speed, which claims that Kingsclere in Huntington (York) was the “slowest” on 0.22Mbps and Darwin St in Livingston (West Lothian) was the “fastest” at 182.52Mbps. Beware caveats.

Openreach (BT) has launched new discounts on their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in UK “Fibre First” cities and towns, which will start on 1st January 2020 and seem designed to encourage ISPs to build stronger take-up in return for reductions on service rental and connection fees.

Cable ISP Virgin Media has today announced that their on-going “Project Lightning” expansion has just completed deployment of a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to cover 6,500 extra premises in Gainsborough (Lincolnshire), which will give locals access to broadband speeds of 516Mbps.

A new Consumer Intelligence survey of 1,068 UK SMEs, which was commissioned by broadband ISP Onecom and conducted between May and July 2019, has found that 51% of small and medium sized businesses feel the benefits of ultrafast 5G (mobile) technology are being overhyped.

Openreach’s fibre broadband and phone engineers often have to work in difficult conditions, which as Winter approaches tends to be exasperated by the additional hazards of snow and ice. Inevitably this can delay repairs and slow the roll-out of new “full fibre” (FTTP) networks, although they claim to be well prepared for 2019/20.
