Openreach (BT) has today announced that 80,000 premises across the city of Edinburgh in Scotland can now access their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network and work is on-going. The city was one of the first to be announced under their “Fibre First” deployment plan, which began two years ago.

Belfast-based UK broadband ISP Fibrus appears as if it could be set to secure a key £15m Full Fibre Northern Ireland Consortium (FFNI) contract, which will construct a new gigabit-capable Dark Fibre or FTTP network to connect around 880 public sector sites across 10 council areas by March 2021.

UK ISP B4RN (Broadband for the Rural North), which is deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) network to rural premises in several counties across England, has furnished us with a progress update and revealed that they aim to reach 40,000 properties passed by 31st March 2022 and possibly c.70,000 by 2025/26.

The Government and Indian conglomerate Bharti Global have today made a successful £800m ($1bn) bid to acquire the British-registered space company OneWeb, which will see the UK invest £400m ($500m) in order to help build a new global network of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites for ultrafast broadband and possibly GPS.

The UK communications and media regulator, Ofcom, has this week called on broadband ISPs, phone providers and mobile operators to “continue to support” consumers who may be struggling to pay their bills as a result of the on-going Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Mobile operator Vodafone today claims to have become “the first UK operator” to showcase the next evolution of gigabit-capable 5G (mobile broadband) technology – “Standalone 5G” (SA), which includes support for improvements like ultra-low latency, “guaranteed speed performance” and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

Fixed home broadband customers of UK ISP Vodafone have been quick to spot today that the provider’s “Ultimate Speed Guarantee” (primarily focused on their “superfast” FTTC packages) has suddenly vanished from the operator’s website. The feature gives a discount when the connection goes too slow.

Residents in the rural Pembrokeshire (Wales) village of Nolton Haven were last week left with a smelly problem after a team of Openreach (BT) engineers, which have been busy deploying Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband in the area, managed to install one of their telegraph poles through a mains sewer.

The release of a major new Season 4 patch for the popular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (CoD) video game, which occurred on Tuesday (30th June 2020), pushed “broadband traffic” over Openreach’s (BT) national UK network to a new daily record of 189 PetaBytes consumed.

Low cost broadband ISP TalkTalk has today refreshed some of their packages and also appear to have stopped selling the Sky Sports and Sky Cinema boosts to customers via their YouView (IPTV) based Pay TV platform, which previously cost £18 and £36 extra per month respectively to add.

The Pembrokeshire (Sir Benfro) council in South West Wales has today announced that Broadway Partners (UK ISP Broadway Broadband) have been chosen to build two new pilot networks in rural parts of the county, which will aim to deliver “gigabit-capable” broadband speeds to local premises. More pilots are expected to follow.

UK ISP Hyperoptic, which specialises in building 1Gbps capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband networks to large urban apartment buildings, has reached a new agreement in Sheffield that will see their service being expanded to cover 5,400 homes in the city council’s housing portfolio.

London-focused broadband ISP CommunityFibre has refreshed their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) packages in the city by adding the new option of a 24 month minimum contract term, while at the same time tweaking some of their prices to be higher under the older 12 month term.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) will today announce that over 600,000 premises across the cities of Edinburgh and Liverpool are the next ones to get their latest DOCSIS 3.1 network upgrade, which makes 1Gbps broadband speeds available to local homes and businesses (i.e. average downloads of 1104Mbps and 52Mbps upload).

UK ISP Plusnet has introduced new discounts on their ADSL and FTTC based broadband and phone packages, which reduce their monthly prices for the first 18 month contract term. On top of that they’ve also thrown in a “Reward Card” (pre-paid Mastercard) worth between £50 to £60.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today joined forces with both the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) in order to launch a new forum, which aims to help “ensure online services work well for people and businesses in the UK.”

Broadband ISP Virgin Media and Cisco have joined forces to setup the first European commercial deployment of OpenRoaming technology for residents on the Canary Wharf estate, which makes it easier for mobile users to stay connected to the internet by allowing them to seamlessly and securely roam between different WiFi hotspots.
