Broadband ISP and TV provider Virgin Media UK has just completed another large network extension in the West Midlands of England, which this time sees 10,000 homes in Brandhall (a suburb of Oldbury in the south of Sandwell) gaining access to their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service.

Mobile operator Three UK has extended their existing “full fibre” network capacity (backhaul) deal with Cityfibre via a new multi-million-pound contract, which will help to connect an additional 1,300 mobile masts across 59 towns and cities. This will support the operator’s new gigabit capable 5G based mobile broadband network.

Cityfibre, which is currently in the process of building a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to 8 million homes and businesses across 100+ cities and towns (c.30% of the UK), has recently added a fairly basic availability checker to their website.

Some of broadband ISP Virgin Media’s UK mobile customers are complaining after they were suddenly issued with a replacement SIM card that doesn’t work in their handsets, instead resulting in a “SIM not valid” message on the screen. The problem is mostly affecting those with older phones, many of which are elderly users.

A new project commissioned by the Digital Innovation Zone (DIZ) looks set to result in 83 GP surgeries across West Essex and East Hertfordshire in England being upgraded to support broadband or fibre optic Ethernet connections with speeds of up to 1Gbps (Gigabit per second).

A new Faversham-based ISP called Yesfibre, which was only incorporated on 27th April 2020, has this week cropped up with tentative plans to roll-out a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to homes and businesses in “selected urban and suburban areas across the UK.”

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today launched a new range of 5G ready business plans for small businesses, which among other things includes access to new entertainment services “as the traditional lines between work and play continue to blur“. Handset customers also gain additional protection for their device.

Mobile network operator Three UK has partnered with Apple to create a new bundle, which combines their 4G and 5G based unlimited use Home Broadband service with an Apple 4K TV device that also includes one year of free Apple TV+ access (usually £4.99 per month).

Rural broadband ISP Gigaclear, which is deploying a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to some of England’s remotest communities, are aiming to pick-up the build pace in 2020 after they reported a total network reach of 129,000 premises (up by 36,000 in the year) and 24,000 customers (up 26%).

The latest report from Point Topic has revealed some big variations in 4G and 5G (Mobile Broadband) based data pricing and usage allowances across Europe, with consumers in the United Kingdom generally placing about mid-table. But other countries seem to offer faster mobile speeds.

The Northumberland County Council look set to approve an investment of £537,000 via the Government’s £200m Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme, which will help 18 additional primary schools in rural parts of the county to get an “ultrafast gigabit capable” broadband ISP connection installed.

Energy provider and UK ISP Shell Energy has become the latest provider to introduce a new range of “ultrafast fibre” broadband packages, although instead of going with FTTP they seem to initially be launching using only Openreach’s hybrid fibre G.fast network that is no longer being deployed at scale.

Alternative UK broadband ISP Zzoomm has this week introduced a range of business packages on their new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which offers symmetric speeds of up to 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) to firms in their initial deployment area of Henley-on-Thames (Oxfordshire).

The annual 2020 world speeds report from research firm M-Lab and Cable.co.uk has revealed that the United Kingdom delivered an average (mean) broadband ISP download speed of 37.82Mbps, ranking us just 47th fastest in the world (that’s sharply down from 34th last year). But there are some caveats to this report.

UK ISP Vorboss, which last year hinted at plans to bring their own FTTP broadband network to 250,000 premises (homes and businesses) in large UK urban areas by 2022 (here), has just completed one of their biggest projects so far after they hooked-up the 22 Bishopsgate building in London to a 100Gbps link.

Some customers of mobile operator Vodafone UK are reporting that another network outage is currently taking place, which appears to be disrupting both data (mobile broadband) and voice connectivity on their 3G and 4G networks (not enough feedback to say if 5G is affected but that seems likely).

Rural UK ISP Ecom, which is busy building a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to rural parts of Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire, has just connected their first live customer in the tiny hamlet of Crafton (used to be part of the Mentmore estate owned by the Rothschild family).
