Network access provider Openreach (BT) has just informed ISPreview.co.uk that yesterday’s launch of Sony’s new PlayStation 5 video game console, including its various associated internet downloads and patches, resulted in data traffic across their national UK network reaching a total of 161PB (PetaBytes).

Space company OneWeb, which is owned by a consortium of the UK Government and Indian conglomerate Bharti Global (here), has today revealed that they will launch the next batch of 36 high-speed broadband capable Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Satellites into orbit on 17th December 2020.

Cityfibre has today announced that popular UK broadband provider Zen Internet has just become the latest ISP to join their growing national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, complementing others like TalkTalk and Vodafone. Until now Zen has been focused on selling Openreach’s products to homes.

Mobile operator and UK ISP EE have this week updated the home broadband coverage checker for their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based services, which since launch (here) hasn’t recognised availability in every area where the new Openreach network has already been deployed.

Sky’s sibling ISP and TV streaming service, NOW TV (NOW Broadband), will this morning launch its own set of Black Friday discounts, which among other things have further reduced the price(s) of their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based “Fab Fibre” (36Mbps) and “Super Fibre” (63Mbps) packages with inclusive anytime UK calls.

Finnish-technology firm Nokia, which is separately helping to supply Openreach’s rollout of FTTP broadband in the UK, has today heralded their new 25G PON technology as the next step in Passive Optical Network evolution and one that “enables the converging of high-end services on a single fibre infrastructure.”

The European Commission (EC) has today agreed that the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) should have the final say on Liberty Global’s proposed mega-merger between broadband ISP Virgin Media and mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK), but this is not expected to delay the outcome.

The CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, yesterday said that he was “open minded” about the possibility of selling a “minority” stake in their prized network access division – Openreach – to help fund the UK rollout of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband, among other things. But they’re “not really interested” in a sale and leaseback style agreement.

Ofcom has today broadly praised the progress that Openreach have made in their on-going efforts to become a distinct “legally separate” company away from BT, although not all stakeholders agree with the UK telecoms regulator and “growing pains” have also been noted with their Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) product.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that it will offer free Data SIMs, packed with a 30GB (GigaByte) allowance that is valid for 90 days, to help 250,000 primary and secondary school children to stay connected with their education this winter. The move may help to mitigate some of the disruption caused by COVID-19.

Sky’s sibling UK ISP and video streaming service, NOW TV (NOW Broadband), is set to end their partnership with Tesco, which began last August (here) and enabled existing Clubcard holders to convert their vouchers into credit for triple the value when used with the service (e.g. £5 worth of vouches becomes £15).

Portsmouth-based UK ISP toob has today announced that their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband network will be extended to cover a further 200,000 homes and business across Hampshire and Surrey, which will build on their existing deployment in the port city of Southampton.

UK ISP BT will this morning launch their own selection of “Black Friday” discounts, which sees the provider sweeten their existing deals by throwing in a new offer of “3 months free broadband” right across their packages, including their top end 900Mbps FTTP plan. The upfront fees have also been removed (free).

Customers of UK ISP Sky Broadband’s legacy capped data usage packages (e.g. Sky Everyday Lite, Broadband Lite, Broadband 12GB or SkyFibre), which earlier this year were given temporary access to an “unlimited usage” boost due to COVID-19, will now continue to benefit from this for the foreseeable future.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has just unveiled the winners of their 22nd annual 2020 internet industry and broadband awards, which among other categories saw CommunityFibre scoop the win for “Best Consumer ISP“, while Jurassic Fibre secured “Best New ISP” and Gigaclear won “Best Rural ISP.”

Existing customers of BT’s UK broadband or EE’s Pay Monthly mobile packages will tomorrow gain the ability to purchase one of Sony’s latest PlayStation 5 (PS5) video game consoles directly from the operator. But as with the prior Xbox deal, there won’t be any special discounts.
