Price hikes are fairly common amongst all of the largest UK broadband ISPs, which tend to increase what they charge by an average of c.4-6% with every passing year, albeit often via a mix of very different and changeable approaches. Customers of mobile operator EE and BT (BTMobile) may be pleased to learn that data usage (mobile broadband) on their network will become free (“zero rated“) from 6pm to midnight on Sunday 11th July 2021, which is of course in celebration of England’s final Euro 2020 football match with Italy.

The UK Government has today announced that it will run for election to the governing council of the United Nations (UN) telecoms agency – the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) – in order to have more of a say in future standards (broadband technologies etc.) and the allocation of global spectrum (mobile etc.), among other things.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced that they intend to look at the role of Motorola’s existing Airwave network in delivery of the new 4G based Emergency Services Network (ESN) contract, which could result in the launch of a formal market investigation into the company.

CityFibre and the Crawley Borough Council (CBC) have today reached a new “blanket wayleave agreement“, which will make it easier for the UK operator to extend their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the West Sussex town to cover 9,000 council-owned homes.

Telecoms giant BT has today announced that they’ve managed to reach an agreement with the Communications Workers Union (CWU), which represents around 40,000 of the operator’s staff (BT, Openreach and EE), in order to avoid the looming prospect of a major national strike.

A new wayleave agreement has been reach between CityFibre and the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP Council) in Dorset (England), which will see the operator expand their new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to include 12,000 council-owned homes.

A number of customers on mobile operator Smarty have this week reported being able to connect via an ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) signal for the first time, which started on Tuesday night and suggests that the operator is close to going live with the new service. But officially, they’re not quite ready yet.

Customers of mobile operator O2 (VMO2) may like to know that they’ve upgraded the capacity of their 4G and 5G (mobile broadband) network at almost 600 UK cell sites, which is part of their preparations for a “record staycation summer” (i.e. the sites are popular tourist destinations and seaside areas, such as Bognor Regis, Bath and Stirling).

The state aid supported Superfast Staffordshire project, which is working with Openreach (BT) to extend the local coverage of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services, has today announced the completion of its contract. As a result of the rollout more than 97% of local homes and businesses can now order such speeds from an ISP.

The Institute of Customer Service has today published their latest biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index (July 2021), which sadly saw only one telecommunications provider make it into their ranking of the top 50 organisations – Tesco Mobile, albeit with a slightly improved score of 83.9 out of 100 (up from 83.3) in January 2021.

The latest independent study of UK broadband coverage for H1 2021 has estimated that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have now increased their reach to 24.33% of premises (up from 19.2% in H2 2020), while 41.72% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 37.4%) and 66.9% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 64.3%).

UK ISP Sky Broadband (Comcast, Sky TV) has today launched a new 500Mbps “Ultrafast Plus” package for consumers, which as leaked last month (here) is based off Openreach’s 550Mbps (75Mbps upload) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) product tier and will cost customers £45 per month.

Mobile benchmark firm RootMetrics has just published a new summary of their latest 5G based UK mobile broadband speed and availability testing across the four primary network operators – EE (BT), O2 (VMO2), Vodafone and Three UK – in the cities of Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle.

UK ISP Toob, which is deploying a new gigabit broadband network to homes and businesses using Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology in the South of England, has today announced that they’ve begun their latest £11m project to deploy across 27,000 premises in Eastleigh and Chandler’s Ford (Hampshire).
