Netomnia, which recently started deploying a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network (XGS-PON) and aims to cover 1 million UK premises by 2024 (here and here), has announced that they’ve already passed 50,000 premises and 20,000 of those were added in just the last two months.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has today announced that they’re bringing forward their target for achieving Net Zero by 15 years (i.e. removing as many carbon emissions as they produce), moving it from 2045 to 2030 for their own operational emissions. But their supply chain and customer emissions won’t follow until 2040.

Openreach (BT) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they, alongside partner Circet and others, have begun trials of a new ‘Air Wand‘ (aka – Air Sabre or Air Lance) machine, which uses compressed air or high pressure water to break the ground and could speed up the rollout of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

The CEO of SpaceX, Elon Musk, has announced that the Starlink service, which delivers ultrafast low latency broadband across the world via a mega constellation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), will finally leave its long-running beta phase and get a full commercial launch in October 2021. But don’t expect too many changes, yet.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve yet to fix a long-running security issue in their HUB 3.0 routers (ARRIS TG2492), which among other things could be used to “silently unmask” the actual, ISP issued, IP address of Virtual Private Network (VPN) users.

Houghton Le Spring (Sunderland)-based telecoms and IT provider Affinity Systems Limited (Rymote) has revealed tentative plans to expand a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to “serve people and businesses” in rural areas in the North East of England.

The team working on Project Taara at Google’s X technology lab have successfully overcome traditional challenges with signal reliability to demonstrate a new laser-based wireless optical communications link that can deliver data at speeds of up to 20Gbps (Gigabits per second) over distances of up to 20 kilometres.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics has today published a general comparison of 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) speeds and availability across 13 of the United Kingdom’s key cities, which sees Glasgow take the top spot on an aggregated average (median) download speed of 144.3Mbps and availability of 28.3%.

The CEO of UK broadband ISP, mobile and TV giant Virgin Media (VMO2), Lutz Schueler, has confirmed that the operator “will be launching soon our first IPTV offer” (Internet Protocol Television), which is probably a reference to the new streaming entertainment service (here) that they began to trial earlier this year.

Last month, we reported that Sky (Sky Broadband), which is owned by Comcast, were gearing up to launch their long-awaited TV via broadband (instead of a satellite dish) service (here). Several sources have now informed us that this will go live this month and be called Sky over IP (SoIP).

BT has confirmed that they plan to deploy 300 of their new Street Hub 2.0 kiosks (formerly InLinkUK) around urban parts of the UK, which offer “gigabit” public WiFi, USB device charging, free UK phone calls, small cells to boost 4G or 5G mobile signals, local information, environmental sensors and a large HD display for adverts.

CityFibre, which currently aims to cover 8 million UK premises with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network by around the end of 2025, has today secured another major investment boost of £1.125bn from the owner of Ikea (Interogo Holdings) and Mubadala (Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund).
