SpaceX Falcon9 OneWeb Satellite Launch

British satellite operator OneWeb, which is partly owned by the UK Government, has – for the first time – successfully launched 40 of their compact Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellites aboard a Falcon9 rocket from SpaceX at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida (USA).

UK ISP Zen Internet has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that their work to make their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband packages available – nationwide – across Cityfibre’s entire network will take longer than originally announced, with completion now expected by the “end of 2023“.

Broadband ISP Lightning Fibre, which is currently deploying a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of Sussex and Kent in England, has today reduced the price of its entry-level 100Mbps residential package to £18 (until 31st Dec), launched a new 50Mbps (symmetric) social tariff and begun testing a 3Gbps package.

Good news. One man has been charged, and three others arrested (currently released on bail), in connection with several thefts of Openreach’s copper broadband and phone cables across Kent (England) during the late spring and early summer this year. The incidents caused significant service outages across several villages.

Cityfibre has today confirmed that they are investing £15 million to deploy their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network to cover “almost every home and business” across the market town of Wokingham in Berkshire (England).

The Director-General of the BBC, Tim Davie, has given broadband ISPs and mobile operators something extra to think about after he proposed that the corporation could plan to “switch-off” terrestrial TV and radio signals by the end of 2030. In their place, the broadcaster would focus on online content and streaming (e.g. iPlayer).

A new report has used data from 16,500 consumer speed tests to reveal the ten UK cities with the biggest performance gap between those with the fastest broadband ISP speeds and those with the slowest. Glasgow was the “most unequal city“, with its fastest speeds (840.4Mbps) being 866 times quicker than its slowest (0.97Mbps).

Alternative network ISP Quickline has announced that their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network has been extended to reach almost 300 homes in the rural North Yorkshire village and civil parish of Skelton, which was connected as part of the state aid supported Superfast West Yorkshire and York contract.

A new Point Topic forecast of fixed line ISP network coverage, which considers both the impact of “full fibre” (FTTP/B) and Cable (DOCSIS 3.1) networks, has predicted that gigabit-capable networks will cover around 97% of the UK by 2030 and the majority of postcodes (75%) will also have the choice of up to three gigabit networks.

Credible sources have confirmed that Openreach this week issued draft contracts for their forthcoming “Equinox 2” offer to UK broadband ISPs, which will further discount the prices of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) product and explains why Cityfibre chose yesterday to launch their competition complaint (here).

Sky UK (Sky Broadband, Sky TV etc.) has, over the past week or so, begun rolling out a new firmware update (QS013) for their broadband-based Sky Glass TV service and display, which fixes various bugs and also appears to improve image quality by enabling local area dimming on the screen.

Network builder Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve formally submitted a Competition Act complaint to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) and Ofcom against Openreach (BT), which accuses the operator of “undertaking an aggressive strategy to foreclose infrastructure competition in the UK fibre broadband market“.

Broadband ISP and mobile giant Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today published the results of a new Assembly Research study, which examined the value of telecoms services in the UK compared to other major countries and found that “typical UK prices for fixed and mobile services are amongst the lowest in Europe“.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today issued an update on its position with respect to whether the upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz) should be released for use by either higher-power licensed 5G mobile networks (mobile broadband) or lower-power Wi-Fi (e.g. home WiFi).

Rural UK ISP Gigaclear has announced that their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is being extended to cover 3,500 homes and businesses in two neighbouring communities – the village of Aspley Guise and town of Woburn Sands – on the border between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire.
